Charlie's review

Charlie McCreery - Consignment Specialist Message Charlie

“ A modern-day showstopper from Hethel, ideal for breezing down British B-roads ”

In 350 Sport form you get that spectacularly sonorous V6 engine allied to class-leading handling.

Background

First released in 2000, the Lotus Exige offered a fixed-roof alternative to its Elise sibling, all wrapped up in a decidedly more hardcore, track-focused package.

It continued to evolve through the 2004 Mk2 but it would be the 2012 release of the Mk3 that saw the biggest sea change, with six-cylinder power replacing the previous in-line four.

Utilising the Evora’s Toyota Camry-sourced 3.5-litre supercharged V6, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the new unit propelled Hethel’s little hooligan into an altogether different performance league. Kicking out a heady 345bhp and 295lb ft of torque, it could now propel the little scamp from 0-62mph in a scintillating 3.7secs on its way to a top-speed in excess of 170mph. Factor in the company’s undoubted handling nous, and it was a match made in lightweight, mid-engined heaven.
At the time, CAR stated: “The new 2012 Lotus Exige S might be something of a parts-bin special, but it’s also the best car Lotus currently makes: far faster than the Elise, far more connected than the Evora, it’s a breathtakingly special thing to drive”.

High praise, indeed.

Since then, Lotus has continued to hone, fettle and develop the Exige with customers able to decide exactly how wild they wanted to go: 350 sir? Oh, go on. 380? 410? 430 Cup?

Today, one thing remains certain: any Mk3 Exige is one brutal piece of kit and a true road and track demon.

Overview

Presented with a Black Pearl on Red colour scheme and still in the first flushes of automotive youth, this Exige 350 Sport V6 comes with a delightfully devilish demeanour.

Parked up, it’s a piece of art. On the hoof, It’s a wild and intoxicating example of what Hethel’s engineers do best.

In the car’s history file you will find invoices showing recent completed works. The first shows the fitment of a stock damper (by Hofmann’s of Henley, at a cost of £365.27) on 1/06/2024 and the other new brake discs and pads all round, with a fresh front splitter and hardtop finisher also fitted (again by Hofmann’s of Henley, £1218.24) on 31/05/2024.

It’s had a very recent oil service at:

•    35,085 miles by Evolution Autoworks, Twyford, 09/05/2025

The Exige’s service book shows the original supplying dealer as being Hofmann’s of Henley, Oxfordshire, with following service stamps also present:

•    1282 miles – Hofmann’s of Henley, 23/12/2016

•    16,541 miles – Hofmann’s of Henley, 21/05/2019

•    32,988 miles – Service Garage, Essex, 10/05/2023

With the Exige’s last oil service completed less than 250 miles ago it is In excellent mechanical order, absolutely on the button and ready to go for its lucky next owner.

Exterior

An Exige provides a wild visual ride but this example’s exterior colour lends it a decidedly sinister persona. The rear end is particularly pleasing with those elegantly simple quad taillights popping against their Black background – parked up, this is a car you’ll simply never fail to turn round to glance at.

The paintwork remains in great condition with and deep lustre and minimal stone-chips. Those that are present sit around the front spoiler and grille. The five-spoke alloy wheels, also presented in a gloss Black, are in terrific condition with no evidence of kerbing. They are shod in matching Yokohama Neova AD08RS tyres – specifically developed for Lotus – each of which remains in good condition, with a very decent amount of remaining tread.

It’s worth noting that there is some mild condensation in the headlights and touch of light rusting on the brake disc surfaces, as well as the odd bit of chipped paintwork (above the offside repeater, above the o/s door handle and on the side skirt). The louvred decklid is slightly cracked towards the end vents but aside from that, the rear spoiler and rear plastic appear to be in very good condition.

Interior

The entry method for an Exige isn’t the most graceful; you ensconce yourself via a slow-motion hitch-kick over that deep sill. Once you’ve shoehorned yourself in though the cabin provides a great driving environment.

This example’s Red interior positively zings against the Pearl Black exterior paintwork. The seat and door card leather remains deliciously supple, while the Black leather dashboard is in similar condition except for around the
four heating vents where it has shrunk slightly, and in the case of the left and right ones split; it’s a common occurrence and a tad unsightly, but not a major gripe.

The passenger and driver’s sills are in good condition, which is a surprise given that Exige entry end exit process. The driver’s seat bolster and door pull do exhibit some light signs of wear but the rest of the interior, including the steering wheel, remains in very good condition.

The best bit in here, is of course that exposed gear lever mechanism; it’s a work of art that you can’t help admire each and every time you enter the car.

Stunning.

Mechanical

3mins 00secs in on our Video Review is the point at which you’ll hear the supercharged V6 work its magic. It’s a breathy, free-spinning unit that emits a harder edge under a heavy foot while the exhaust note (3mins 29secs) is equally titillating.

Of course, they’re both at their absolute best at full chat. We’ve had it out for a spin (or two) and it’s a heady, addictive experience.

Mechanically, this car is sorted and ready to go. As stated above in the Vehicle Overview section, it’s had a very recent oil service as well as new brake pads and discs all round last year.

As standard, the Exige came with a Lotus DPM (Dynamic Performance Management) switch that allowed drivers to switch between Touring, Sport and DPM off modes. This car features the desirable additional Race Pack option, which sharpens up the suspension settings for maximum traction out of corners on track.

The Exige’s engine bay remains clean and tidy, whilst underneath you will find its under trays in situ.

The car is supplied with two keys.

History

In the car’s history folder, you will find the V5c Registration Document which notes the date of its first UK registration as 31/03/2017. It also indicates a total of three owners from new.

Two other invoices (other than the service invoice noted in the Vehicle Overview section, above) are also present. The first shows the fitment of a stock damper (by Hofmann’s of Henley, at a cost of £365.27) on 1/06/2024 and new brake discs and pads all round, with a fresh front splitter and hardtop finisher also fitted (again by Hofmann’s of Henley, £1218.24) on 31/05/2024.

Finally, a recent online vehicle history check is present and shows no known issues with outstanding finance, theft, having been written off or imported/exported. It also lists MOT tests, and respective mileages carried out at, for Feb 2020 through to Mar 2025.

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos to support our claim that this Lotus Exige V6 has been maintained to an excellent standard.

Summary

What a beast.

In 350 Sport form you get that spectacularly sonorous V6 engine allied to class-leading handling and in combination, that generally means one very happy driver behind the wheel.

Consignment specialist Charlie McCreery says: “a modern-day showstopper from Hethel, ideal for breezing down British B-roads”. Yes, it’ll do that. However, it will also devour them with scintillatingly, scalpel-sharp aplomb, and if you take to the track it’ll repeat that same trick there.

Exhibiting only very minor signs of wear and in excellent mechanical health, this low-slung brute is absolutely on the button and ready for the next owner to enjoy it to the max.

We think it will realise somewhere between £38.000 and £43,000, which will provide excellent value for the next owner.

Be in no doubt, this is a weapon.
