Background
First released in 2000, the Lotus Exige offered a fixed-roof alternative to its Elise sibling, all wrapped up in a decidedly more hardcore, track-focused package.
It continued to evolve through the 2004 Mk2 but it would be the 2012 release of the Mk3 that saw the biggest sea change, with six-cylinder power replacing the previous in-line four.
Utilising the Evora’s Toyota Camry-sourced 3.5-litre supercharged V6, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the new unit propelled Hethel’s little hooligan into an altogether different performance league. Kicking out a heady 345bhp and 295lb ft of torque, it could now propel the little scamp from 0-62mph in a scintillating 3.7secs on its way to a top-speed in excess of 170mph. Factor in the company’s undoubted handling nous, and it was a match made in lightweight, mid-engined heaven.
At the time, CAR stated: “The new 2012 Lotus Exige S might be something of a parts-bin special, but it’s also the best car Lotus currently makes: far faster than the Elise, far more connected than the Evora, it’s a breathtakingly special thing to drive”.
High praise, indeed.
Since then, Lotus has continued to hone, fettle and develop the Exige with customers able to decide exactly how wild they wanted to go: 350 sir? Oh, go on. 380? 410? 430 Cup?
Today, one thing remains certain: any Mk3 Exige is one brutal piece of kit and a true road and track demon.
