Overview

An FV4201 Chieftain is now available from The Market. It appears to be in its preserved original, non-modified state with its main gun still on the turret. You can take a look at the photos in our detailed photo gallery below.

Exterior

For the FV4201 Chieftain, only a handful of components (especially mechanicals) were shared with the preceding Centurion. This meant that when the Chieftain was released, it got a new design for both the hull and turret. Over the period (and 12 versions), it kept getting updates. The frontal armor, made of steel, is said to have a thickness of just under 9 inches.

Interior

The FV4201 has a crew capacity of four, which includes a driver, commander, gunner, and loader. The new design turret allowed is said to be more comfortable for the crew, but let's not forget that due to no backrest, the gunner had to rest their back against the commander's legs.

Mechanical

The 55+ ton tank was powered by a British Leyland diesel engine (BL40 and in later days BL60). The maximum power was anywhere between 450 to 850 hp or thereabouts. The maximum range is said to be more than 300 miles and a road top speed of nearly 30 miles per hour.

History

Development for a new MBT began as soon as it was made clear that the Centurion was to be replaced. The pre-production examples of the FV4201 Chieftain were brought in as early as 1965 and it was continually updated till the 1990s. Odometer shows 1603 miles.

Summary

The Chieftain is a monumental piece of machinery not just for the British Army but others too.

It found its way in with many national armies across the globe and stayed in active service for more than 30 years. Worth a buy? Absolutely!

Estimated $6,500 - $9,500.

PLEASE NOTE: The vehicles from this collection have been sitting for a number of years. Mechanical and running condition of each lot is unknown, and they are being sold 'as is'.This vehicle is being sold on Bill of Sale only.
