Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ One of Land Rovers most desirable models with one of the best engines on the planet. A sporting SUV if there ever was one. ”

For anyone seeking a comfortable and commanding SUV with genuine off-road ability and a charismatic V8 soundtrack, this Discovery 4 ticks all the boxes.

Background

The Discovery 4 was never offered with a V8 petrol engine in the UK or Europe – only in markets like Japan, Russia, Australia, and the Middle East – so they’re a rare treat over here, especially in right-hand drive. In place of the SDV6 diesel engine, these models have a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, delivering a hefty 385bhp and 375lb-ft of torque to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic, with a low-range gearbox and Terrain Response system.

JLR subtly evolved the already impressive Discovery 3 into the Discovery 4 in 2009, retaining the overall shape but comprehensively tweaking its comfort, build quality and performance. Owners universally wax lyrical about these cars’ load-hauling capacity and cushy interior, not to mention unstoppable off-road capability. The arrival of the Disco 5 in 2015 was less appreciated, so the Disco 4 remains a desirable “sweet spot” model with strong residuals.

Overview

As you might expect from a Japanese Discovery, this one is loaded with gizmos and survives in remarkably rust-free condition. It’s a seven seater, built in Solihull for export to Japan, where it has spent all its life before being returned to Blighty and re-registered with the DVLA just a few weeks ago. Its condition is frankly gorgeous, especially underneath, and it has a clean MoT to July next year.

The odometer is showing 55,629 miles, and the car is accompanied by a Japanese service history telling us that the 5.0-litre V8 has been serviced 11 times already. Our vendor drove it from South Wales to Abingdon and reports no issues whatsoever. “It’s like an armchair really, with a nice bit of poke,” he says. “Good and raspy too.”

Exterior

The Fuji White bodywork is in undeniably excellent condition, and obviously this Discovery has never been off-road. Its chromed mirror caps are yet to encounter an English hedgerow, and its 19-inch silver 7-spoke alloy wheels have had no contact with the curbs of Kensington. (They’re wearing a matching set of 255/55 R19 Michelin Latitude tyres with plenty of tread.)

The panels, door jambs and bottoms, wheelarches and sills are remarkably clean for any 14-year-old car. Even the optional side steps and the tread area around the rear bumper look untouched. Our photographer has highlighted one small scuff on the rear offside wheel arch. Other than that, there’s not much to report.

Interior

You can expect an impressive level of interior equipment, including Bluetooth audio, multi-zone climate control, cruise control and voice activation. Land Rover’s respected Terrain Response system is present and correct, working in tandem with height-adjustable air suspension and a locking centre differential – all controlled by proper chunky buttons in the centre console. Unlike many Japanese Discoverys this one has had its speedometer converted from kmh to mph.

The heated memory seats are electrically adjustable, and the black leather trim is in excellent condition throughout, showing only normal creasing. It’s a black-on-black colour scheme – black leather and black panels – but the light-coloured headlining prevents it from feeling too oppressive, and polished metal inserts around the doors and vents provide some visual relief. The dash is leather-clad, and plush carpet mats are fitted.

This being a seven-seater, there are two seats that fold into the boot floor, ideal for the kids. Entertainment is covered by a Harman Kardon audio system, a Sony head unit in the glovebox, and an aftermarket Alpine drop-down screen in the ceiling. There’s also a dashcam as well as a surround camera system, with cameras positioned under the wing mirrors and in the front bumper, displaying pictures on the central monitor.

Mechanical

The Japanese don’t salt their roads, but even that fact doesn’t seem to explain the remarkable lack of dirt and rust underneath this Discovery. We hesitate before calling any car “rust free”, but do take a look at our photos because we doubt you’ll have seen a D4 chassis as good as this in a long time. Even the paint on the chassis and wishbones looks largely untouched, and some of the airbag struts retain their factory stickers.

The engine bay is equally free from any signs of neglect and has been smartly presented. As far as we know the car has no mechanical issues, and it flew through its MoT without any advisories.

History

This Discovery 4 comes with Japanese paperwork documenting a rigorous maintenance routine. Our vendor has helpfully picked out the important details, which are typed onto a separate sheet. Please scroll our photos to find it…

In summary, the car had 11 services up to 53k miles in October last year, so it is now due a service – although it has only covered a couple of thousand miles since then. The largest intervals were under 11k miles, and for most of its life the oil has been changed every 2-3k miles. (If you want a fuller interpretation of the Japanese paperwork, you can point your phone camera at it and use the Google Translate app.)

The spare key is also present.

Summary

For anyone seeking a comfortable and commanding SUV with genuine off-road ability and a charismatic V8 soundtrack, this Discovery 4 ticks all the boxes. It’s a rare and compelling combination of low mileage, high specification and careful ownership. Exactly the sort of example that can hold its value well, if looked after.

These V8s sound glorious. They’re pretty rapid, and they’ll tow anything. However, you probably won’t ever get more than 20mpg from this car, so if an efficient workhorse is what you need, get a regular UK-spec SDV6 instead. But if you want an object of desire – one which will remain rare and desirable while other Discos crumble and expire – here it is.

We are happy to offer this car for auction with an estimate in the range of £20,000 - £25,000.
