Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ A striking example of a Solihull favourite, with low mileage from new, and with £20,000 recently spent. ”

Introduced in 1983 and only modestly revised over the years, the Land Rover Defender has rightly earned its place as one of the most influential vehicles of the 21st century.

Background

Introduced in 1983 and only modestly revised over the years, the Land Rover Defender has rightly earned its place as one of the most influential vehicles of the 21st century. Able to trace its lineage back to the very first post-war Land Rover (and not a lot of squinting is necessary to bridge the seventy-year gap between old and new), the Defender might not be the last word in civility but by heck it’s a survivor.

With its permanent four-wheel-drive system, lockable centre differential, live axles at both ends, and long-travel coil suspension, the Defender is as good off the beaten track as it is appalling on it. But no-one cares, because it has levers sprouting out of the floor, a big, bluff front, and only gets better with age; like a certain type of man, the Defender doesn’t age, it matures, and any hard-won patina it gains simply adds to the legend.

Available from the factory as a pickup, van or station wagon, there are a vast array of companies out there who will turn yours into a motorhome, campervan, mobile crane, tray-back off-roader, or recovery truck. In fact, if you can imagine it, then someone will have built it.

Overview

This 2008 Satin Tank green bodied Defender 90 (short wheel base) is matched with a green and black interior. It comes with a Santorini black roof panel and has ticked up a modest 40k miles on the odometer. The vendor has spent the best part of £20K on it, including a full body respray. It comes equipped with all the bells and whistles, including Gulwing windows and sand ladder, which were imported from Switzerland.

The vendor bought this car back in 2019 because he was looking for a project to do with his son. The two of them have done loads of trips off-roading, through France, the Lake District and Wales, to name but a few. They have also taken it to numerous Land Rover events before Covid ruined things. Now the vendor’s son has gone abroad, so it is time for this motor to find a new home. In the vendor’s words: “I don’t think you’re going to get an example like this very often. It’s just in great nick. We’ve had so much fun in it. The only reason I’m getting rid of it is because my son is getting older and doing other things, so hopefully someone else can have as much fun in it as we have had”.

Exterior

Finished in Satin Tank green, this has been tastefully upgraded and customised without going beyond what some might consider as “too far” for a road-going SUV. It presents in very good condition throughout. The car's front fascia features a classic Land Rover grille with a green mesh insert and the Rivolve branding prominently displayed in the centre. The car's side profile is characterised by its flat panels and straight lines, giving it a no-nonsense and purposeful look. The Defender sits on black, 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, which are in good condition and they are all fitted with BFG AT tyres with white letters on the outside.

Modifications to the exterior include:

· Strip, prepare and repaint body in satin tank green with Santorini black

· Install the roof panel

· Paint plain wheel cover in Tank green and Rivolve branding in satin black

· Add rear smooth cover plate finished in tank green

· Add NAS rear tow step bar finished in satin black

· Add Santorini Adventure front grille with Rivolve branding

· Add satin black steering guard

· Add 4 x 18” satin black 5 spoke alloys

· on BFG AT tyre, white letters on outside

· Add graduated tinted glass

· Fit pair of laser mirror reflection lights to top of bumper wired to main beam

· Fit pair f LED headlights

· Fit rear parking sensors

· Fit rear view camera

· Underbody Waxoyl rust treatment rear view camera

Interior

The cabin of a Defender is notorious for being a functional and utilitarian space that is designed to provide comfort and convenience for both driver and passengers in rugged off-road conditions. However, the green and black leather interior of this example features all the potential bells, whistles and finishes you could hope a Defender to feature. The Rivolve embossed seats and the sport steering wheel are a really nice touch! The dashboard is a simple and functional design, with large gauges and controls that are easy to use. The dashboard, centre cubby and door cards are in lovely condition. The only imperfection worth highlighting is the mild damage to the door edging. The rear cargo area is accessed through a large swing-out tailgate and features a flat and spacious load floor that can accommodate large items and equipment. Alternatively, the fold down seats can be instated to accommodate four passengers in the back. The Defender masters the art of matching rugged construction with thoughtful design to ensure that passengers travel in comfort and style.

Modifications to the interior include:

· Sound proofing

· Installing Bluetooth

· Handmade comport sports front

· Heated seats to match rears

· Seat riser for driver’s seat

· Remove dashboard assembly, etch, prime and paint tank satin green

· Add leather dash pods, grab handle and centre cubby box deep custom lid

· Fit sports steering wheel

· Fit short shift gear lever linkage

· Add security cut off switch and move alarm module

Mechanical

This Defender packs the 2.4litre, TD5 engine. It has enhanced power as it has been stage 2 remapped. Everything works well and looks to be dry and in its right and proper place. The vendor just recommends that the battery might need checking, just because it’s been sitting idle for a couple of months.

History

This car comes with a full-service history and has had 5 prior keepers. This car has benefited from a full rebuild. Nene Overland stripped it back to bare metal and it has had the best part of £20k+ spent on it. The car is also being sold with the original documentation, including the warranty benefits, owner’s handbook and service portfolio.

Summary

The Defender, like its predecessors, is a true-blue British icon and has countless fans and followers from all corners of society. This is a handsome example of a true and timeless classic. The Defender has benefited from a lot of attention and care. As such, it is in excellent condition, with just over 40k miles on the clock, meaning it’s got many years of off-roading ahead. We expect that a prospective buyer will need to part with somewhere between £35,000 and £40,000 to take this car home.
