Background

The Land Rover is one of the all time great all terrain vehicles and is synonymous with rugged, no nonsense off roading. The brainchild of Maurice Wilks, the original Rover off-roader was launched in 1948. Having owned an American built Jeep, Wilks realised there was a gap in the British market for a revolutionary new 4x4. The rest as they say is history with the Land Rover going on to become one of the most famous 4x4 vehicles of all time.

In 1983 the Land Rover 110 continued the evolution of the plucky 4x4, replacing the faithful Series III Land Rover. The 110 was joined by the Land Rover 90 in 1984 and in 1990 Land Rover renamed the 90 and 110 models as the Defender 90 and Defender 110.

The Land Rover offered here by Bonhams is a 2002 Land Rover 90 Td5 which has covered just over 31,000 miles from new.

Overview

This 2002 Land Rover Defender 90 Td5 is a RHD two door, SWB and seven seat example that was built for export to Germany. This is supported by a Land Rover Certificate which confirms it was manufactured on the 23rd June 2002 and was destined for the German market. There is no additional information as to why this Defender 90 was ordered in RHD configuration for export. Perhaps it was for use by a member of the armed forces stationed in Germany. Whatever its intended use, it is an interesting detail in this Defenders history. It then returned to these shores in 2005 and has been in the UK ever since.

The Defender was purchased by the current owner in 2022 and they embarked on a series of mechanical refreshes, spending nearly £6,000 in documented maintenance to fine tune the 4x4. They say that "this Land Rover gets compliments wherever we go and is a real head turner.

Exterior

Finished in a very attractive shade of Loire Blue metallic, this Defender 90 looks very smart indeed and is set off very nicely by its silver alloy wheels.

The Defenders paint presents well with a few blemishes noted. There is a paint blister on the bonnet. The door bottoms have a number of blisters which are shown in the photos. And there are some scratches from branches on narrow country lanes, which is of course the natural habitat for a Land Rover.

The rest of the Defenders bodywork is very straight and in clean condition and it has clearly benefited from not being worked hard. The owner adds that the Land Rover has been kept in a dry garage during their custodianship.

The Defenders stylish 5 spoke alloys are in nice shape with just a few marks present here and there. All 4 wheels are fitted with a matching set of Radar Renegade A/T5 4x4 tyres which have plenty of thread left. The rear mounted spare is also in good condition and doesn’t appear to have been used.

A tow bar is fitted along with mud flaps and a rear folding step.

Interior

This Defender 90 was ordered with a grey check cloth interior. The seats are all in nice shape with minimal signs of wear and with seating for 7, this is a very practical and versatile 4x4. Seat belts are also installed for all 7 seats.

An aftermarket steering wheel has been fitted which gives the Defender interior a more sporty look.

No stereo has been fitted to this Defender but speakers are installed.

There is a small crack in the top corner of the dash plastic which is shown in the photos

Rubber Land Rover floor mats are fitted in the front and a full length rubber mat protects the floor carpet in the rear.

The headliner in the front and rear cabs looks nice and fresh and is in very clean condition.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet resides the dependable Land Rover 2.5 litre Td5 diesel engine which has been serviced and maintained to a high standard by the current owner. Since they acquired the Defender in 2022 they have had new injectors fitted, along with a new fuel pump, fuel filters and a new fuel pressure regulator. The air flow meter and MAP sensor were also renewed.

The suspension has been refreshed with new brake pads, brake servo, bushes, cv joints, bearings, wheel nuts and new swivel housing with a top and bottom joint kit installed. A new clutch slave cylinder and a new battery were also fitted in January this year. The owner adds that the ECU has been repaired which comes with a guarantee.

On the underside the Defender is very clean indeed and it clearly been spared from many years of traversing muddy lanes and fields.

History

This Defender 90 Td5 has had just 3 owners from new and the history file includes documentation from its re-registering in the UK in 2005. Also in the history file is the certificate from Land Rover confirming the Defenders date of manufacture and its export to Germany.

The Defender comes with a valid MOT Certificate until April 2025 with the only advisory being some fraying to one of the seat belts.

The history file also includes all the invoices which document the works carried out by the current owner.

Two sets of keys come with the 4x4 and it is fitted with a remote alarm immobiliser.

Summary

Finding a Land Rover Defender 90 with low owners and low miles is becoming increasing rare and this 2002 model looks lovely in metallic blue. With its seven seat configuration this example is a high practical and rugged 4x4 that has been refreshed mechanically. It is now on the button and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
