Background

Originally intended to be a British equivalent of the Willys Jeep during WWII, the Land Rover Defender quickly gained a reputation around the world for its ruggedness and versatility. Originally named either the 90 or 110, both names referred to the length of the wheelbase in inches.

Production of the Defender began in 1949, went through multiple generations until 1983, and the 1983 style model was produced until 2016. The Defender received a production run of 67 years and with a little over two million units built, it is regarded as one of the most successful off-roading vehicles of all time.

Overview

When the 90 and 110 both became referred to as the Defender 90 and Defender 110, there was no radical new design to accompany the change, but they did modernize the interior, increase power output, and add a heavily requested one piece windshield.

However, there were significant upgrades regarding engineering. The Defender received coil springs at all corners and a lockable center differential. Both of these changes dramatically improved the Defender’s already phenomenal off roading capabilities.

Exterior

The exterior to this Defender 90 is finished in a bright shade of yellow. The paint is in good condition overall, especially for a vehicle designed to take a beating. There are a few inconsistencies around the car though.

There seems to be some fading on the driver’s side around the ‘V8’ badge in front of the door, above the steel plate at the rear, and in front of the rear wheel. On the passenger side, there appears to be some fading at the rear quarter panel. The heavy-duty front bumper has a baseball sized dent on the passenger side. The black canvas roof looks in good condition and shows no holes or tears on the outside.

This Defender has some bumps and bruises, but none are significant.

Interior

The inside of this Defender is black and features half-cloth half-leather seats. The gray cloth seats are in good condition, they show no creasing whatsoever, but the passenger seat does have some very minor stains. The dashboard is clean and all the gauges function properly. The Momo steering wheel is in great shape and is a nice custom touch inside the cabin. The rubber floormats up front and behind the seats fit snugly into their respective spaces. The rubber casing around the center tunnel has cracked down between the differential controls and the central compartment. Both door panels are clean, and the inside of the canvas top appears to be just as clean as the outside.

Mechanical

It is abundantly clear that this Defender is not harboring any major damage underneath. Surprisingly, for a car that spent almost 10 years on the East Coast, there is almost no corrosion to be seen whatsoever. There is some surface corrosion along the exhaust, which is highly common, but the rest of the underside looks great.

History

The first owner acquired the car in 1995 and hung on to it until 2004. It began life in New Jersey and accrued roughly 57,435 miles before eventually making its way out to California circa 2004. The second owner bought the car in late 2004, kept the car in California and brought the odometer to 97,788 miles by 2018. The third owner had the car from 2018 to 2021 and only put 152 miles on the clock. The seller acquired the vehicle in December of 2021 and has also kept the car in California.

Summary

The Land Rover is one of the most successful production vehicles of all time, and an absolute legend in the off-roading world. Clever engineering kept the vehicle at the top of its class from 1983 to 2016 without ever needing major upgrades or radical redesigns. It is the epitome of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The Defender is an off-road warrior through and through, and the 90” wheelbase gives it a fantastic look. This specific example has been excellently maintained overall for an almost 30-year-old vehicle. If you are looking for a great cruiser for beach getaways, or a capable car to go remote camping with, this is the vehicle for you.

We are excited to offer this vehicle for auction at an estimate between $90,000 and $100,000.
