Background

Boy, didn’t the Willy’s Jeep rock during WWII? Well, post-war Blighty couldn’t be doing without having its own utility workhorse. Stepping up to the plate was Rover, with its take on the same theme.

And my, didn’t it do well. The SI featured an unbreakable steel box-section chassis, riding on leaf springs, clothed in alloy body panels, with a 1.6-litre engine and a four-speed transfer box transmission.

Right from the off it became the British Isles’ old faithful: backbone of the British army, aid organisations and the landed gentry’s agricultural tour de force. It didn’t take long for the secret to get out, and pretty soon its rugged go-anywhere persona had conquered the world.

It evolved steadily and continuously over the years, with the last vehicle (in Defender form) rolling off the production line in January 2016. That’s 68 years for the venerable old beast.

The vehicles produced in this century bore little resemblance – save for the underlying design principles – to the original, with austere fittings having long given way to a world of every mod con conceivable.

Overview

This desirable 110-inch XS’s V5 document shows that it was first registered on the 22nd of May 2015. Listers Land Rover Droitwich was the supplying dealer and it has had precisely one owner (and as we’ll see, a very meticulous one at that) from new.

It comes with a full and complete service history (see both the History Highlights section and photo gallery, below). In its ‘the Good Garage Scheme’ booklet you’ll find numerous stamps, all from The Garage Worcester Ltd. These include:

• 11/10/15 @ 1136 miles

• 28/09/16 @ 2864 miles

• 07/03/17 @3743 miles

• 11/01/18 @ 5263 miles

• 22/05/19 @ 8366 miles

• 10/11/19 @ 10,162 miles

• 23/04/20 @ 11,513 miles

• 29/03/21 @ 13,712 miles

Yes, that’s right, it has more services than years in existence; it doesn’t get any more comprehensive than that and this strict adherence to maintenance helps to explains why, just shy of six years since it left the showroom, this Land Rover remains pretty darned immaculate.

It has a current MOT certificate, which runs until the 21st of May 2021.

Exterior

This is one very sharp looking Land Rover. There’s not much to grizzle about in terms of exterior aesthetics. The paint still presents very well with a mesmerising metallic fleck – it’s a far cry from the drab olive of the 1950s.

Panel seams are clean and at first glance there’s not a hint of corrosion to be found on any exterior hinges, brackets or bumpers. The headlight mounting plates and front grill are also very good, as are all black plastics.

Side runners and a step at the rear are fitted for ease of access and egress. It also comes with a tow bar, which isn’t currently fitted (residing instead in the boot).

You’ll find a Land Rover branded mud-flap in place at each corner, as well as a five-spoke silver alloy wheel shod in a Continental Cross Contact 235/85R16C tyre with oodles of tread remaining. A matching spare wheel and tyre is thoughtfully secured to the rear door, should you ever find yourself in need of a replacement.

Interior

The cabin is just as good as the exterior. At the back, the rear seats look unused. It’s a similar story up front, too. Although it’s worth noting that the driver’s leather outer bolster looks to have a small vertical split.

There’re one or two small scuffs on the plastic near the (non) glove compartment, but that’s the sum of our exceedingly minor criticisms. Door cards are clean, as is the floor. Up top, the alcantara headlining remains as new.

Rubber ‘Defender’ branded foot-mats are fitted. All rear seats fold flat to give serious stowage room.

Overall, it’s exceedingly smart.

Mechanical

Clean engine bay – check. Undercarriage debris free – check. Chassis in top condition – check. And how does it drive? Well, we can tell you that it does the whole shebang that you’d expect of a Land Rover. It starts immediately, everything functions as it should, and it’ll provide you with a sharp driving experience whether that be on the road or seriously off-piste.

There’s not much else to add – it’s a superb example.

It’s worth checking out the video below to watch it in (albeit, stationary) action. Our model even throws in a look of determined attention, for added and rugged authenticity.

History

What’s the one thing, above all else, that any buyer of a classic or modern classic wants to see in its history file? That’s a rhetorical question, because here comes the answer… a full service history! Well, as if by magic, this Landie has exactly that. Even better, it’s always been looked after by the same specialist – The Garage Worcester Ltd.

As well as the current MOT test certificate, a handful of expired ones and the V5 document, you’ll also find one or two invoices for consumables. Perhaps of more interest are several documents from Listers Land Rover Droitwich relating to its original order purchase back on the 4th of April 2015.

Short, sweet and more importantly, complete.

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos of this and other paperwork to support our claim that since new this car has been maintained to the very highest of standards.

We include an online HPI report run at the auction start which shows no finance outstanding and no insurance markers for theft or damage.

Summary

Think the modern Defender iteration is too expensive? Too complicated? Or simply that it’s been hit numerous times with an ugly stick? Then it’s an original that you require.

Yes, production may have ended a smidgeon ago, but luckily there are still recent examples like this one to be had. Many (for many, read the majority) Land Rovers lead heavy duty, harsh lives right from the off; it’s what they were built for and it’s what they thrive upon. However, find a mollycoddled example like this and it’s almost the next best thing to having driven it off the forecourt yourself.

This example’s low mileage, comprehensive service history and superb condition means that we think it’ll realise somewhere in the region of £36,000 and £42,000. At the bottom end we’re entering bargain territory, whilst at the top end it’d still be a blooming good buy.

If you like your Land Rovers old school, then here’s your chance to pick up a long wheelbase cracker. What you then do with it, is entirely up to you.
