Background
In the late-1980s super-saloon arms-race, the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz 500E and Vauxhall Lotus Carlton suddenly found themselves with a serious contender – the Lancia Thema 8.32.
Taking the large Lancia and fitting it with a Ferrari engine was a clever move, giving the Italian model added under-bonnet kudos, and its low-key looks appealed to those wanting a less conspicuous method of (rapid) transport.
Lancia drew on support from Ducati and Ferrari in the development of its very special Thema offering.
Squeezing a V8 32-valve engine (hence the ‘8.32’) from the Ferrari Mondial/328 into the engine bay meant that the 8.32 delivered 215 bhp and could reach 100 km/h in under seven seconds. The driving experience was enhanced by electronically controlled damping.
The car’s high price tag was partly justified by its luxurious interior and partly by an engine cover carrying the seductive message, “Lancia by Ferrari”.
