Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ A chance to bring a gorgeous Italian 1950's sports Coupé back to life. ”

Comes with original UK V5 title document.

Background

One of the most influential designs to emerge from Italy post-WW2, the classic Aurelia was the first car ever to employ a V6 engine.

Designed in wartime by Francesco de Virgilio and launched at the 1950 Turin Motor Show, the Aurelia B10 was powered by a 1,754cc 60-degree V6 of all-aluminium construction that used overhead valves operated via short pushrods instead of Lancia's traditional overhead camshafts.

An advanced unitary-construction design, the Aurelia retained Lancia's 'sliding pillar' independent front suspension, first seen on the Lambda, but used a novel semi-trailing-arm layout at the rear, another world first.

The transmission too, was unusual, comprising a two-piece prop-shaft and combined gearbox/rear transaxle on which were mounted the inboard brakes, though for once this was not an entirely new departure.

The original B10 saloon was joined the following year by the landmark, Pininfarina-styled B20 Coupé, a fastback '2+2' on a shortened wheelbase which, with its combination of sports car performance and saloon car practicality, can be said to have introduced the Gran Turismo concept to the world.

Models with longer wheelbases and larger engines in various states of tune followed, while to cater for independent coachbuilders, Lancia offered the longer-wheelbase (291cm) B50 chassis, based on B10 mechanicals, and later the B52, which came with the 2.0-litre engine of the B20/B21.

Overview

We believe this example of a landmark model may have coachwork by Stabiliment, Farina of Turin, the family firm where styling maestro Battista 'Pinin' Farina learned his craft.

Which would make it a very rare car indeed.

Either way (and you may wish to do your own detective work), this is a partially restored example of a very stylish and influential model that broke new ground in several important respects.

It is ready and waiting to be taken to the next stage of its journey towards full restoration.

The odometer is reading 19,706kms, although we can’t vouch for the accuracy of that figure.

This vehicle is currently in storage at CARS Europe BV. If you require a quote for shipping anywhere in the world, please contact them direct (details below).

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their legal proof of purchase.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It must be collected within 7-days of the auction end. Storage charges (€70 + local VAT per car per week) will commence from the sixth day following the auction end.  These must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carsworldwide.com.

Exterior

The car has been stripped back to bare metal and there is evidence of corrective welding work at the base of the doors.

The delightfully slim and elegant recessed door handles are particularly attractive, in our opinion.

The bodywork looks straight and true, although there are a couple of areas where the panel beater’s art and skills will be required.

There is a large collection of assorted parts with the car, including door cards, lenses, glass and various bits of trim.

Interior

The interior is partly disassembled but the structures are intact and even the pale green and white upholstery has survived remarkably well.

The steering wheel is cracked in several places and the carpeting and other perishable trim is largely missing.

The dashboard is broadly intact (and some elements may be in the accompanying collection of parts) and the instruments and dials look decent.

Mechanical

Judging by its clean, dry appearance and the presence of some newer looking parts, we would guess that the engine has been rebuilt – but we can’t be sure.

Clearly, we can’t vouch for the car’s mechanicals because we haven’t started or driven it.

History

In common with many of the cars from this collection, this example comes with very little paperwork or history.

It does, however, have V5C UK registration dating from 2014.

Summary

Very few of these Farina-bodied Lancia Aurelia B50 Coupés were constructed, and even fewer have survived.

Having seen how achingly beautiful restored examples are, we have no doubt that this car will attract keen interest among collectors and marque connoisseurs.

We’re confident to offer this fine car for auction with an estimate of €28,000 - €38,000.

The car is currently in storage, you can see a picture of the collection as it stands today at the very bottom of the photo gallery.
