Background

Constructed between 1966 and 1976, the Jensen Interceptor is 2-door 4-seater grand tourer from England. The car was designed by Carrozzeria Touring of Italy and is now known for being a remarkably good-looking vehicle despite its strange shape. The first Interceptors were built in Italy as well by a different company named Vignale, but this stopped relatively early and production was moved back to the Kelvin Way Factory in West Bromwich, England to be done in-house by Jensen themselves. Jensen was well known at the time for using glass-reinforced plastic to make body panels; however, the introduction of the Interceptor saw a return using a more practical steel body-shell instead.

Overview

This specific Interceptor is a 1973 model meaning it is a Mark III. The difference between Mark Is and Mark IIs were some exterior tweaks, and the Mark II interior received a heavy overhaul in order to satisfy US safety regulations. The jump from Mark II to Mark III is equally reserved. The Mark IIIs front fascia was tweaked again, GKN alloy wheels and air conditioning became standard equipment, and the seats were redesigned. A new 7.2L 440ci V8 was also introduced to replace the prior 6.3L 383ci V8.

Exterior

The exterior to this Interceptor is clean, but not without flaws. The center of the hood has a small chip, and the passenger side of the hood has 5 small paint bubbles. The rubber seal around the windshield is failing in some areas and might need replacing within the next few years. There are some chips in the panel gaps between the doors and the body. Towards the rear of the car, we see that the driver’s side rear quarter panel has a handful of large bubbles than the ones on the hood. The reverse light on the driver’s side taillight has cracked in two places. Beneath the rear windshield on the passenger side of the car, it appears that red touch-up paint was used to cover some prior chipping. Glass around the car is clean, showing no chips or cracks. All of the many chrome pieces are straight and free of wrinkles, and the wheels show no curb rash. The exterior of this Interceptor overall is clean, but there are some minorly damaged areas that could use attention.

Interior

The interior was done with black leather. Condition around the interior is solid overall. The carpet resting over the dash does reveal a sizable crack in the dash pad when lifted, although it looks like only the surface leather has been compromised and not much else. The black front seats have been nicely preserved and show no holes or tears. The rear seats are in similar condition, showing no obvious damage. Carpets in the car show no damage, and even though they lay flat the fit is not perfect in the driver’s footwell. The black dashboard is unbothered, and all of the gauges mounted within are clean and easily readable. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has seen better days and looks fairly loose at the rim. Moving down to the center console, the wood trim shows no major damage. In general, this is a tidy interior aside from the crack in the dash pad.

Mechanical

We are happy to report that the underside of this Interceptor harbors no major damage. The frame and floorboards are solid, suspension components seem to be in order, and the exhaust does show some discoloration, but this is also expected given the age of the vehicle. As for the engine bay, things are not as clean as they could be, but all the various components appear to be in their correct locations.

History

From what we can make of the documents available to us, the seller acquired this Interceptor in October of 2012.

Summary

Among classic British automobiles, the Jensen Interceptor is often unfairly overlooked. Italian styling by Carrozzeria Touring and a wonderfully raucous 7.2L V8 come together to create a both gorgeous and quirky four-seater that is an absolute pleasure to drive. Today’s example has some question marks around the outside, but the interior is in solid shape. This Interceptor won’t take much to get back into proper condition, and that leaves us confident that it will have little issue reaching its $30,000 - $50,000 estimate.
