Background

Did the car enthusiast ever really fall in love with the Jaguar XJ-S? Following on from the breathtakingly gorgeous E-Type, it was neither stunning to look at or especially thrilling to drive. It soldiered on for far too long.

In March 1996, all this was about to change as Jaguar introduced the world to its stunning XK8 at the Geneva Motor Show. It was the company’s first eight-cylinder model since the Daimler 250.

The XK8 shared its platform with none other than the Aston Martin DB7 and was the creation of design director Geoff Lawson. Available as a coupe or convertible with 2+2 seating, in 1998 a more powerful XKR model was introduced.

Featuring a 370hp engine, with boost from an Eaton supercharger, the Jaguar now had the performance to blow away the opposition. A 0-60mph sprint time of just 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 155mph are the significant figures.

Even by comparison with the latest performance cars, the XKR is genuinely fast and the performance is readily accessible at all times.

When you are not in the mood though, the XKR will cosset like all good Jaguars should.

Interiors are typically Jaguar with the ability to relax and soothe their occupants. Acres of soft leather, plenty of wood trim and all the bells and whistles you could imagine.

There are rear seats, fine for small children or as an overflow for extra luggage.

Good examples are now becoming hard to find, but guess what, we have a beauty for sale, so read on if you fancy scratching that XK itch.

Overview

If you are going to waft around in a convertible Jag, then we can safely presume you have no objection to being noticed. That being the case, you want your XKR to be in a bright colour and the Pacific Blue hue of our car is undoubtedly the best. Paired with a champagne leather interior, this must be the ideal combination.

Our seller is the car’s third owner, and he has enjoyed the car for almost fourteen years. He bought the car from a chap who had to decide which of his playthings he most wanted to keep. He chose his light aircraft over the Jag, big mistake in our opinion!

The car was always intended to be a high days and holidays car and it fulfilled that role admirably. The undoubted highlight of our seller’s ownership was a 6,000 miles European tour, undertaken in 2013. What a way to travel. The XKR proved to be faultless and was much admired.

Over the last few years our seller has been involved in a major house building project and has also rekindled his love of motorbikes. As a result, the Jag has remained cocooned in his dry storage facility, little used. As such, the decision was reluctantly made to sell the car. We sense he will regret letting it go, so get bidding quickly!

Exterior

We can immediately tell that this XKR has been cared for during its life. The blue paintwork still has a lustre to it and it polished up really well.

The only thing we noted was that there are a number of small stone chips on the bonnet and front bumper.

The hood is in very good original condition with just a few scuffs due to the hood being folded. When folded away, the tonneau cover can be fitted for a neater look.

Five-spoke Detroit BBS split-rim alloy wheels signal the car’s sporting intent and we do notice the odd mark here and there. Premium tyres are fitted, but looking at the tread depth, replacements may well be needed in the not too distant future. Not something we would want to skimp on with a car this powerful.

Badging is discreet, just the red ‘R’ joining the XK moniker at the rear. It comes from a later car, but it does look rather nice. The discerning will know.

Interior

A more luxurious and comfortable interior would be hard to find. The leather clad front seats are both cosseting and supportive, essential if you are exploring the car’s performance to the full. They are heated too.

You will also notice that the XKR comes with a wind deflector, easily fitted when required behind the front seats. It makes a huge difference to the amount of buffeting experienced at higher speeds and should ensure you reach journey’s end with unruffled hair. No excuse then for not dropping the top at every available opportunity.

The driving position is near perfect, with plenty of adjustability and the leather and wood steering wheel a delight to hold. The gear selector falls easily to hand, ideal if you want to exercise a little control over the gearbox.

Equipment count is high, as one would expect. Our seller chose to upgrade the Jaguar sound system to something more modern, so now a quality Alpine system takes pride of place. There is a cable in the glove box to connect an iPod – how very modern! A more up to date connector should be easy enough to fit. There is a CD autochanger fitted in the boot for the oldies…

The factory stereo unit and speakers are included in the sale, so can be refitted if originality is of prime importance.

The car is also fitted with a Parrot Bluetooth kit for connectivity on the move.

The champagne leather has stood the test of time really rather well. There is a little creasing and cracking in places, especially to the driver’s seat, though some hide food may well help in this regard. There is also some slight wear from the seat belt rubbing.

We also note that the wind deflector has left a mark on the rear seats, which look as though they have probably never been sat in.

Carpets are all in decent condition, the over mats could however do with a steam clean.

Boot space is excellent with an XKR, so no need to travel light on those weekends away. Under the boot floor sits a space-saver spare wheel, good enough to get you out of a tight spot. Tools are present and correct too.

Mechanical

Lift the bonnet and the sight of that 370hp V8 engine is sure to impress. It all looks quite spic and span, without being overly sanitised for sale.

The car always fires up first time and drives as one would expect of a quality and well maintained Jaguar.

We always include plenty of photographs of our car’s undersides, so check out the gallery. There is some light surface corrosion in places but nothing we can see that would cause us any concern. A little time with a wire brush and some quality underseal would be time well spent.

History

The XKR comes complete with its handbooks and service book. The latter boasts plenty of main dealer stamps from the car’s early life.

Also present are a collection of old tax discs and MoT certificates, which help document the car’s history. The XKR comes with two sets of keys.

The current MoT runs until June 2022. We would mention that there were some fails at the last test, but these were immediately dealt with by our conscientious seller and the car then passed with no advisories.

Amongst the important maintenance work carried out by the seller was the replacement of the timing chain and adjusters in April 2013. The water pump was also changed at the same time. The car has only covered a modest mileage since.

New gearbox oil and a replacement filter were fitted too.

In 2014 the throttle body was replaced and a year later the driveshaft was repaired, and reconditioned lower front wishbones were fitted.

The water pump was changed again in 2018.

Regular oil changes etc have been carried out by our seller and we gather this was done again recently.

Please see the gallery below to see the extensive service history which comes with this car.

Summary

Jaguar has recently announced that it is to be a solely electric car manufacturer by 2025, so soon to be gone are the days of fast, elegant coupes and convertibles with V8 firepower.

The XKR still looks modern today and is more than capable of keeping up with the very latest batch of sports cars but will also gently waft you along the highways and byways if you are that way inclined. All that and with an unfettered view of the sky above…

We estimate this lovely low mileage XKR Convertible will sell for between £11,000 and £16,000.
