Background

The Jaguar XK8 came as a replacement for the XJS, which had been around for more than two decades.

That's twice as long as most modern cars, and the XJS received praise and criticism in equal measure until the time came when Jaguar desperately needed a new car to keep up with the competition. That's how the XK8 (codenamed X100) came to be.

Jaguar was under Ford's ownership, which meant better resource management and improved chances of making a successful product.

Which the XK8 most certainly turned out to be. It won many enthusiastic fans, as a result of which Jaguar sold a great number of cars (in both the standard and the more performance-orientated XKR forms) in a decade-long production run.

In the XK8, many buyers found a car that didn't just look great and perform well but was genuinely worthy of the famous Jaguar badge it wore. Jaguar sold over 90,000 cars throughout the XK8's production run.

Overview

Overall, this LHD auto 1997 Jaguar XK8 is in very good condition, outside, inside and underneath.

It has evidently been well looked-after and maintained over the years and is certainly one of the best examples we’ve seen for a while.

The car is showing 54,536 kms on its odometer.

The car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documentation is shown in the gallery.

It has been in storage for some time and will need a basic service to prepare it for the road.

Exterior

The bodywork is free of any dents, dinks or creases of any significance that we can see.

The shut lines and panel gaps appear consistent and even.

The metallic blue/grey paintwork is pretty much pristine, save for the odd tiny stone chip here and there, and the whole car presents beautifully.

The finish has plenty of shine and lustre to it.

The wheels are good all round, although some of the lacquer has peeled away from the rear wheel on the passenger side.

There is a tiny dent by the fuel filler cap that looks as if it might have been caused by a stone.

There are a few paint chips on the passenger side wing mirror and some scuffs and scratches on its driver’s side counterpart.

A little paint has rubbed away on the door edges.

All the exterior trim, lights, lenses and badging look good.

Interior

If anything, the inside is even better than the outside and is in time-warp condition.

The cream leather upholstery is neither creased nor worn and looks great, front and back. There is a slight scuff on the front seat on the passenger’s side.

The dark brown carpets and mats are also very good and provide a very attractive colour contrast to the cream leather on the seats and door cards.

All wood veneers are rich and glossy and look as good as new. So, too, do the steering wheel, gear selector, dashboard, dials, instruments, switches and knobs.

The door cards are in excellent order.

The only obvious flaw is that a short section of the headlining has come away from the trim around the window above the driver’s head.

That’s about it – everything else is very good indeed.

Mechanical

Aside from the entirely standard bloom of rust dust on some components, the remarkably clean undersides look to have a good deal of structural integrity.

All components and parts in the engine bay seem to be in their right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with any service records, history or documentation beyond what is shown in the gallery section.

Summary

This appears to be a very good, authentic XK8 that has been properly looked-after throughout its life.

We think this fine British GT car from one of the world’s premier marques should reward its next owner with many years of high-quality motoring pleasure – for a relatively small price.

We’re confident to offer it for auction with an estimate of between €10,000 - €20,000.
