Background

Developed as a testbed and showcase for Jaguar’s game-changing, Le Mans-winning, brand-defining twin-cam XK straight-six, the stunningly pretty XK120 was so positively received during its 1948 London Motor Show debut that full production began mere months later.

The 120 in its name indicated early alloy-bodied examples’ top speed in MPH, an achievement which marked them as the fastest production cars in the world at the time– with only minor modifications, one example hit 135!

Supplanted in 1954 by the upgraded XK140, and again in 1957 by the XK150, the XK line gained equipment, power, and displacement (depending on exact spec), but maintained the grace, beauty, and spirit of the original until replaced by the E-type in 1961.

Overview

This car is one of 656 FHC or fixed head coupe XK150’s produced with a 3.8 liter engine, and that number encompasses both left-hand as well as right-hand drive examples, as well as both automatics and manuals. Considering the auction car’s desirable Special Equipment or SE spec and 4-speed, 3-pedal arrangement, its scarcity is obviously even greater–unfortunately precise, agreed-upon production numbers reflecting this degree of detail are not readily forthcoming.

Exterior

Most obviously distinguished from earlier 120 and 140 XK models by a one-piece, unsplit windshield, XK150 styling also incorporated many other unique features such as higher doors, a revised engine lid, and more.

The auction car appears to be fully standard as well as intact, with all factory correct trim and brightwork intact. Wide whitewalls are 100% period correct and were often fitted to these cars from new, and particularly to North American market examples.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the driver is presented with a beautiful and enticing four-spoke steering wheel mounted to a telescopic, reach adjustable column. The manual gearbox is particularly sought-after in these late production XK-series cars, and is certainly better paired to the race-bred, Le Mans-winning twin cam straight-six in the long, graceful nose.

Mechanical

The XK150 was available with both 3.4 and 3.8 liter variants of Jaguar’s amazing twin-cam straight-six, and the auction car represents one of the more desirable offered options with its dual-carb, 220 horsepower 3.8 SE specification.

History

The auction car is offered with limited historical documentation.

Summary

Rewarding to own, drive, look at, and maintain, the XK150 is a vintage Jaguar of significance.

Estimated $20,000 - $30,000.
