Background

Introduced by Jaguar on September 10, 1975, at the Frankfurt Motor Show and put into production the following year, the XJ-S carried on the legacy of the E-Type with its V12 engine. The new coupé was produced in three series until 1996, the last of which lost the hyphen in its name and became simply the XJS. From the E-Type, it inherited the 5.3-litre 12-cylinder engine but fitted with a new innovative Bosch D-Jetronic electronic injection system, developed by Jaguar’s own engineers. The bodywork, elegant and rich in heritage compared to Jaguars of the recent past, is based on a platform derived from that of the company's flagship XJ, making the XJ-S more suited to long, fast journeys than to purely sporting driving. Performance, on the other hand, is excellent, with a 0-100 km/h sprint in less than seven seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h - a remarkable figure for a kerb weight of 1,675kg.

Overview

First registered in Italy in 1976, this model belongs to the first batch of Jaguar XJ-S produced between 1976 and 1977. Compared to the examples belonging to the later series, those of the first one have some significant differences. Key features include the rear end, finished in matt black to contrast with the body colour; chromed interior B-pillars; smaller, bullet-shaped side mirrors; GKN's distinctive 'Kent' wheels; and energy-absorbing bumpers to prevent body deformation in the event of a low-speed impact. Today, it is not easy to find a wholly original first production Jaguar XJ-S on the classic and collector car market, i.e. with all the original equipment details. The one we offer, with a manufacturer's certificate of conformity, seems to meet all the originality requirements.

Exterior

The car is preserved in almost all its exterior parts. The only major intervention in 2017 was a complete repaint of the bodywork, as, even if it's still partly original, it was yellowed and porous in places and therefore uneven in appearance. Slight traces of surface corrosion are visible on the left edge of the licence plate light panel. The car, according to the current owner, has always been kept in an ideal and dry condition, as evidenced by the sheet metal, which shows no traces of rust or oxidation. The photos show a good alignment between the fixed and moving parts of the bodywork. It is likely that the car has not been in an accident during its lifetime. The chrome parts and, in general, all the aluminium mouldings are also in excellent condition. According to the owner, the windows are original and first equipment, without scratches. Also according to the owner, the seals are also original to the period: those on the windscreen and rear window are a little cracked in the outer areas, but this does not prevent them from ensuring a perfect seal. The front lights are also period, the reflectors show slight signs of oxidation and the bezels have been replaced with new components that conform to the originals. The plastic parts of the rear lights are original and still in good condition. The alloy wheels are in excellent condition, both aesthetically and structurally; only the clear paint on the spare wheel is slightly yellowed by time.

Interior

The interior appears to be completely original, including the floor mats, which are in excellent condition. The entire headliner was redone in 2017. The radio, Radiomobile model 1085 X, is the original as supplied by the company as original equipment: it receives only medium and long waves, although it is perfectly functional. The luggage compartment also appears to be in order, with its spare wheel cover and battery. The left window motor is very fast, while the right one is a bit slow. The air conditioner also works but needs a revision of the suction system.

Mechanical

The engine appears to be in excellent working order as it has always been regularly and meticulously maintained. The number stamped on the engine corresponds to the number on the document issued by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. The V12, according to the owner, starts without hesitation, makes no abnormal noises, and does not smoke. The owner adds that the pressure and temperature values of the engine and associated services are within the normal range and points out the efficiency of the gearbox, brakes, power steering and the very quiet transmission. Although they have lost some of their damping ability, the shocks are still good. The tread is about 90%, but the tyres are old. The exhaust pipes are made of stainless steel. There are traces of rust on the underbody, especially on the left rear floor. As with most British classic cars, some oil seepage is noticeable. The most important and typical defect of the early XJ-S has recently been resolved by the installation of a special kit, fitted in the original distributor and ECU box (so not visible from the outside), which has eliminated the well-known reliability problems associated with the operation of the Lucas Opus ignition. The engine compartment, as can be seen in the photos, is "make-up free": it has never been painted, but still looks clean and tidy. Only a few metal components show slight traces of surface oxidation. The yellowed internal parts of the engine compartment are due to fuel vapours and heat. The fuel tank cap is not the original one.

History

Bought new in 1976 by Anthony Quinn (who won two Best Supporting Actor Oscars: in 1953 for Viva Zapata! with Marlon Brando and in 1957 for Lust for Life) while living in Rome, the car was collected by the actor from the London dealer Henlys. It was driven to Italy with English plates, then re-registered with the capital's number plate and registered to Quinn's wife, Jolanda Addolori. A few years later, the car was sold to an entrepreneur in Naples, then to a geologist in Verona and finally to the current owner. The car will be delivered with the following items: a case containing the log books, including the owner's manual; the certificate of historical relevance issued by the ASI (Automotoclub Storico Italiano); the Jaguar branded jack in its original, undamaged bag; a tool bag, also original and complete; a photo album documenting the discovery of the car and a list and photos of the initial restoration work carried out, the PRA (regional vehicle registration authority) inspection and the Jaguar Heritage certificate.

Summary

The white gives a much sought-after elegance to this English classic, all the more interesting as it is one of the first examples produced and is equipped with a powerful and refined V12 engine of almost 290 bhp. The external and internal state of preservation of the car, scrupulous maintenance and a famous first owner in the person of actor Anthony Quinn do the rest. A car with undeniable charm and a good story to tell.
