The Jaguar XJ-S is an instantly recognisable British icon thanks to its purposeful stance, long bonnet and, of course, its trademark flying buttresses.
First unveiled in 1975, the XJ-S received its top-of-the-range 300bhp, V12 engine in 1985, from which point it went as well as it looked. Of course, the resulting fuel efficiency can be a challenge but you can forgive almost anything – even single-digit fuel consumption - when a car sounds and goes like the XJ-S V12 does.
The V12 Jaguars were widely considered to be the most refined cars in the world, regularly trumping Rolls-Royce and the Mercedes S-Class in the ubiquitous ‘Best Car In The World’ group tests so beloved of magazines like CAR.
