The Jaguar XJS was destined to be an instantly recognizable British icon from the moment it was unveiled in 1975. It was then gradually updated and re-engineered over the years until we arrive at the car we’re selling here, the 1991 XJS Coupe. The car is powered by a 4-litre straight six engine, which is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. In terms of performance, the XJS Coupe can reach a top speed of 150 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The car also features a smooth and comfortable ride, thanks to its independent suspension system and power-assisted steering. This is a high-end luxury car that combines style, performance, and comfort in one package. Its sophisticated design and powerful engine made it a popular choice among car enthusiasts and luxury car buyers. The XJS is one of the few cars to have attained genuine classic car status while it was still in production, leading to many people buying them with an eye to hanging on to it as an investment. This is important, as it provides a rich source of carefully conserved cars.

Overview

This XJS has ticked up a fairly modest 91,000 miles on the odometer and, though it could be beautiful, it is in need of some love and attention both inside and out. With areas of rust around the paintwork and with a shabby interior, this car would benefit from some work to bring it back to its former glory. The vendor bought the car in July 2021 and spent the best part of £4k on the underside, work to the brakes and a full service to get it through its MoT. In the words of the current owner, all electrics work as far as he’s aware and there are no knocks or dings, and the car has not been involved in any accidents as far as owner aware, and it has an active MoT. The vendor has only taken this car out for one trip in the 18 or so months he’s owned it, as it has either been in storage or at the garage having work done. The car is being sold because the vendor’s circumstances have changed and it’s time to focus on new passions and interests. The owner is aware of the car having at least two other keeps, though he’s unsure how many previous owners there have been in total. This car is being sold a folder with all receipts and the owner is sure that the number plate is significant and specific to the car and model.

Exterior

While this is a classic design, the bodywork would benefit from some attention throughout. The XJS dons a sleek and classic design, with a long hood and a tapered rear end. It features a low profile, a distinctive grille and a low-slung body that exudes power and performance. The headlights are also a standout feature, with their circular shape and sleek design. There is bubbling on the paintwork between the bonnet and the windscreen, and blemishes on the rear side panel. Moving towards the side of the car, you'll see the XJS's sleek and aerodynamic profile. Here there is evidence of chipped paintwork on the rear wheel arch on the driver’s side and damage to the door edges. At the rear of the car, you'll find the XJS's distinctive taillights, which are housed in a sleek, wraparound design that complements the car's overall styling. The car's trunk lid is also angled to give it a sporty and aerodynamic appearance. The 16-inch lattice wheels are in good condition.

Interior

The cabin could do with some attention. The upholstery is tired and worn throughout, with a significant tear on the driver’s seat and scuffs to the seat-backs and the electric components no longer work. The veneer on the dashboard and centre console look alright from a distance, but the walnut trim on the driver’s door panel is cracked and there are missing pieces. The carpet and floor mats are dirty and stained, particularly on the front passenger’s side.

Mechanical

The car can reach a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). This engine produces a maximum power of 219 bhp at 5500 rpm. The battery is flat and the straight six engine remains untouched, but looks to be leak-free and free of known faults, as are the rest of the mechanical components.

History

According to the vendor, this car is being sold with a full and extensive service history with provenance. The vendor explains that extensive restoration work had been carried out and the car benefits from an MoT which expires in May 2023, and a private and specific number plate. Its most recent MoT flagged some advisories around corroded coil springs on the offside and nearside, some play in the nearside rear wheel bearing and corrosion to the rear anti-roll bar.

Summary

As you know, The Market likes to be transparent with our descriptions, and that is why this write up includes lots of detail, including a few faults. That being said, this is a car that was widely thought of as the Best Car In The World when it was new, so we estimate that it will sell for somewhere between £4000 and £8000, which is a fair amount of car for the money. Even now, almost thirty years later, the refinement, style and sheer performance on offer make a Jaguar XJS one of the very nicest places to be. It’s a safe place to store your money, too while prices are still low compared to comparable models from other manufacturers. Prices have been rising steadily over the past few years and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
