Background

Six years after the initial release in 1975, the Jaguar was given a new name, the XJ-S HE (High- Efficiency). With the updated V12 engine, this was more powerful, producing 295bhp, and it was also much more economical. Some cosmetic changes took place, with new five spoke wheels, chrome inserts on the bumpers and burles elm inserts to the door cappings and dashboard facia.

This was the start of many variants of the XJ-S, such as a six-cylinder version and a targa-type model which was never very popular. The full convertible was modified by Hess & Eisenhardt located in Ohio, USA, who were under contract from Jaguar to convert the cars into full convertibles. This was until 1988, when the official full convertible XJ-S, like the one we have here today, became available, and as expected it was a huge success. 1991 saw another facelift for the Jaguar under the new owners, Ford Motor Company. This time it was marketed under the model XJS, with a new 4.0 litre engine alongside the V12, which was enlarged to this particular model, the 6.0 litre with 304 bhp. Production of the XJ-S ran up until 1996, which gave it an impressive 21 year innings.

Overview

Andrew is the owner of this superb 1993 Jaguar XJ-S. He has owned the car since July 2005, when it was purchased to enjoy long weekends away or sunny days out along the coast.

With the 6.0 litre XJ-S an already special car, Andrew decided in September 2016, that he would send it off to Jaguar specialist David Marks Garages, where it would be converted from an automatic to a manual. This project can only be described as done properly! It took until March 2017 to complete, and had everything it needed, all with photos to back up the paperwork, (just a few of them are in the gallery).

The conversion included a brand new gearbox with bell housing, and custom made prop shaft, plus some preventative maintenance work to the inner wings on a couple of areas. This all came in at around £8,000, and since then over £4,000 has been spent on various items and jobs carried out to the XJ-S.

With the car now a manual, Andrew has enjoyed a few miles in the XJ-S, and he says it has transformed the car into a more enjoyable drive, but with the car getting used less and less, in fact less than 10,000 miles since 2006, he has decided to part with his 6.0 litre manual XJ-S.

Exterior

This 1993 XJ-S is finished in the lovely Glacier White. It’s quite obvious to see the car has been well cared for, for many years, and it looks to be wearing 95% of the original paint.

Starting at the front of the V12, and the later style deeper bumpers are in good condition with a bright chrome trim across the top. There are some age-related stone chips to the edges, and the passenger side corner has had a small touch up at some point. The headlights and indicators are in good order with no cracks to the lenses, and the jag still retains the lower fog lights, with the original covers. The bonnet aligns straight and even around all the edges, there are just a few stone chips to the leading edge in keeping with the mileage. The seller was keen to point out that there is a small blister on the scuttle panel, just by the windscreen on the driver’s side, and a small hole on the scuttle where the bonnet return is, on the passenger side.

Around the long flanks of the XJ-S, the door shut lines are nice and equal. Down the sides, there are no signs of any dinks from any car park injuries. The chrome door mirrors are in excellent condition with no pitting to the finish. The same can be said for the door handles to both sides. The driver’s side rear arch has a very small amount of surface corrosion to the edge, but nothing a quick sand and treatment wouldn't sort out quite quickly. There is a small amount of paint chipped off on the nearside wing, just on the edge of the arch.

The rear of the XJ-S is presented well, with no cracks in the light lenses. The bumper is in good condition with the chrome finish nice and bright, there is a small scuff on the nearside. The boot lid aligns nice and straight and the badges and boot handle are in good order.

The roof on the XJ-S is the original and has worn very well indeed, with just a small amount of wear by the window. When closed it is nice and tight and it folds down as it should to then be covered with the tonneau cover. Also included is a cover to go over the soft top to protect it if it were to be stored outside.

The 5 spoke wheels are all in excellent condition, with just some slight fading to the Jaguar centre cap. The Pirelli tyres are all matching and have a good amount of tread remaining for the new keeper.

Interior

The XJ-S is finished in Isis Blue leather which is in nice condition, with just a very small amount of patina to the finish on the driver's seat. The passenger seat has some light creasing and the rears don’t look to have had much use over the years. The door cards to both doors are in good condition, with just the slightest wear to the Burles elm trim.

The dashboard is in excellent order, with a Burles elm facia which is also in the same condition. The instrument binnacle is all reported to be working as it should, with the odometer reading 75,273 miles at the time of our visit. The steering wheel has been replaced with half wood, half leather, and the original one will come with the car. To the centre of the car the trip computer and clock lights up as it should, and just below the factory radio cassette is present. This is coupled to a boot mounted CD multichanger.

The windows are working as they should along with the remote central locking. The only electrical issue is the cruise control has not been connected after the manual conversion.

The carpets are in good condition with no obvious wear to the driver's heel pad area, where you would usually get some. There are a couple of marks here and there as you would expect on a car of this age, but some upholstery cleaner should sort these out. Helping protect them further are a set of factory mats.

In the spacious boot, the spare wheel and cover sit at the back, with the jack to the left and in the original bag. The carpet is in good condition with just a few marks.

Mechanical

The underside of the Jaguar is generally in good condition, with just some light surface rust to the suspension, and some odd patches of under sealant flaking off. Nothing a weekend under the car couldn’t sort out.

The engine is in excellent condition after having all the gaskets replaced in 2017, to ensure a leak free Jag from every orifice. This was done at the time of the manual conversion, whilst the engine was out it would have been crazy not to. As mentioned, the gearbox was brand new with a new bell housing, clutch and flywheel. There have been custom made mounts and a prop-shaft to suit, for this no expense spared conversion.

The V12 fires up with ease and, as you would expect with any V12, it sounds amazing, especially as Andrew has had the centre boxes taken out of the system to allow the V12 to breathe a little easier, this making it, in his words “just how a V12 should sound”, and we have to agree!

The drive in the XJ-S is nice and smooth thanks to new suspension bushes which were also replaced in 2017, and the Koni dampers were fitted a couple of years before. The car then had a full geometry check and adjustment.

Onto the braking, and yes, as you would expect, in 2017 new rear discs and pads along with brake hoses were fitted, ensuring the weighty V12 comes to a halt nice and straight.

History

With an enthusiast owner comes a huge history file, in which you will find everything the Jag has received, certainly since being in the ownership of Andrew.

All the hand books are present along with the sales brochure for the 6.0 litre XJ-S. Previous MoT certificates are plentiful with all the mileage matching up with the service stamps.

Andrew has had an MoT carried out which is valid until the 31st July 2022, and this passed with no advisories.

Summary

The perfect 2+2 cruiser, more than capable of munching up miles thanks to the 6.0 litre V12 and now a manual, some might say much more fun to drive. A no expense spared conversion has seen in excess of £12,000 spent on the XJ-S since 2016, and since then it has covered around 3,000 miles.

There’s nothing left other than to grab the keys, drop the roof and enjoy this well sorted iconic British classic.

We estimate that this lovely XJ-S 6.0 litre will bring in the region of £14,000 - £16,000.
