Background

The XJS, is a ‘luxury grand tourer’ manufactured from 1975 to 1996. Jaguar produced a total of 115,413 units over the 20-year period with its final form being produced under Ford Motor Company’s ownership.

From July 1981 the Car received the HE V12 engine, or High Efficiency which gave the car much better fuel economy and a higher BHP output as a happy by-product. The XJS was Jaguar’s longest running model and was superseded by the very popular XK8.

1995 was the last year of production for the XJS and as such a special edition ‘Celebration’ model was released of which this car is a fine example of. Imported into the UK in 2017 from Japan, and registered back in March this Jag is in excellent original condition with low miles and heaps of paperwork. The car has remained with the same owner since it's arrival to the UK.

Overview

This XJS is in fantastic condition throughout with low miles and a seemingly good specification.

The car looks to have been very well taken care of and comes with plenty of paperwork which is in Japanese.

Exterior

The exterior of the XJS is in fantastic condition and if the photos are to be believed then there is barely a scuff or a mark around the entirety of the outside. There might be the odd very minor mark from general wear and tear, but we failed to notice anything noteworthy, please do check out the photos for yourself.

Wheels and tyres look to be in good condition, with the tyres looking to be relatively new with plenty of tread left on them. We can’t be certain on their age but there doesn’t appear to be any of the usual signs of them being aged or worn.

Similarly, glass, lights and chrome trim all seem to be in good condition with no cracks, hazing, chips or pitting. All shut lines and body panel gaps around the car are tight and uniform suggesting a straight chassis. From the photos there also doesn’t seem to be any signs of corrosion or excessive damage across the car.

Interior

The interior of the XJS is in fantastic condition, the light grey leather upholstery across the cabin looks to have very little wear and tear as does much of the rest of the interior furniture. There are again some very small sections that give an indication the car is nearing 30 years of age such as the tops of the door pocket on the driver’s side, but that’s about all we can see.

The interior really is a great example of Jaguar’s skills in creating luxurious and well thought out, ergonomic spaces and it has survived admirably well during its life, even the rubber seals look to have survived well, perhaps even replaced over in Japan.

To further evidence the clear amount of care and consideration this Jag has had during its life, the dash, steering wheel, and centre console looks to be in near new condition. The wood sections are glossy and free from lacquer peel or cracks and the leather clad top section is just as good as the rest of the leather upholstery. All dials and gauges are reported to be working and can be seen in the video, you can also see from the gallery that the interior lights work too.

Mechanical

The V12 looks to be in fine health visually and if the mechanicals are as good as the exterior condition of the Jag then you can rest easy that this car’s power plant has been well looked after.

Visually, there are no bare wires, no cracks in pipes or tubing and no signs of fluid leaks. The only thing to indicate the car’s age is the small amount of paint flaking off the top engine cover.

The car starts up and despite the 6.0 litres and 12 cylinders its quiet and civilised inside. In fact, we’re sure you’ll have to turn your volume up when listening. Luckily for the rest of us, the exhaust note is deep and throaty and gives you a choice of soundtrack with just the lowering of your window.

Being the later model, the XJS has the updated V12 giving better fuel economy and power whilst still being buttery smooth to drive and sounding superb.

History

The Jag comes with a clean HPI report and a heap of Japanese paperwork, all of which looks neat and organised, with the original owner’s manual, service book and black leather wallet.

From the looks of the paperwork the car has had regular maintenance and car afforded to it over in Japan.

Summary

To the casual onlooker, this looks to be a good-looking Jag but get closer to the XJS and you start to notice just how good it really is. Things like the condition of the interior start to jump out at you and have you picturing the car on the driveway, enjoying it during the summer cruises. There’s only one way to make that dream a reality and it’s to register a bid, and this Jag definitely deserves it.

We estimate this vehicle to fetch between £15,000 - £20,000 in auction.
