“ Lovely Late XJ40 – Only 31,500 Miles ”

If you’re in the market for a pristine British automotive icon then you should look no further.

Background

The Jaguar XJ6 is a classic British luxury saloon that has garnered a reputation for its elegant styling, refined performance and traditional British craftsmanship. The XJ6 was produced with different trim levels, with the flagship model being the Sovereign which offered more luxury features.

The XJ6 was popular among those who valued traditional British luxury and style. It appealed to buyers looking for a prestigious and comfortable saloon with a classic design. The model was a particular hit in favoured markets like the UK, US and Europe with the  XJ6 being seen as a more affordable alternative to the more expensive luxury saloons from brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, offering similar levels of luxury and comfort.

The XJ6 maintained the classic Jaguar styling cues, a long hood, sleek roofline and distinguishing quad-headlamp arrangement. The design was a continuation of the series III XJ6, featuring subtle updates to keep the look fresh whilst retaining the elegance and timelessness associated with the Jaguar. Moreover, the XJ6 received praise for its smooth ride, luxurious interior and refined handling. Auto-critics often highlighted the cars blend of old-world charm with modern amenities. However, some critics noted occasional reliability issues and higher maintenance costs compared to its predecessors.

That said, the performance of the 2.9 litre engine was deemed adequate for a luxury sedan of its class, providing a balance between power and fuel economy. Its straight-six engine was part of Jaguars AJ6 series and was known for its smooth performance as well as advanced design, for its time. It produced around 165 horsepower and roughly 235Nm of torque, which was fed to the wheels by a 4 speed automatic gearbox or 5 speed manual. The handling was often described as composed and comfortable with the suspension prioritising a ride quality over handling characteristics.

Overview

This example is finished in Diamond Blue with timeless tweed interior with wood veneer accents. Optional upgrades include a sunroof. These cars were also offered as standard with climate control, power windows, central locking, cruise control and a premium sound system. Performance wise, it features the 4-speed automatic transmission and 2.9 straight-six engine.

Mileage is recorded at 31,464 miles on the ODB at the time of photographing the vehicle.

The car comes with ample history and service records. We counted 12 stamps in the service book and a plethora of receipts for various work completed on the car over it’s 34 year lifespan. The most recent MoT’s are clean and free from advisories.

We started the car and moved it back and forth. We can tell you that it starts well and without hesitation and we saw no signs of any smoke or unwanted noises upon start up. The autobox behaved well, selecting gears with ease.

Exterior

The exterior of the Jaguar XJ6 is near flawless. We saw little to no dinks, dents, folds or stone chips on the vehicle. There is unfortunately a small patch of what appears to be corrosion making it’s way through the lower offside front sill and there is a slight crease where the bonnet meets the front grille. Other than that though the XJ6 is looking flawless.  The panel alignment is excellent with the doors and boot lining up exactly as the manufacturer intended them to do so. Furthermore, the alloy wheels are in great condition for their age too.

The glass, seals, lights and badging around the Jaguar present remarkably, they are crystal clear with no fading or cracks that we saw. The story is the same with the brightwork on the exterior, as these are subseptable to pitting after elongated periods of time.

Underneath the XJ6 shows little to no sign of any corrosion that we saw, which is surprising given that these are subseptable to rust. We can see from the paperwork that the car has been treated with Waxoil.

Interior

The interior of the Jaguar is well appointed with tweed seats apposed to the leather and a cockpit that puts an emphasis on comfort and luxury. There are buttons within reach of the steering wheel that operate the lights and trip computer. Lots of these XJ6’s were specified with a leather interior but we are informed that the first owner was conscious of the leather marking his suit so opted for the timeless tweed option instead. A smart choice in our opinion, as there is nothing more fitting for such a vehicle.

As you open the door to the XJ6 you are instantly greeted by the overwhelming high quality materials and finishes, something that has in part been lost on modern day vehicles. High quality leather and wood veneer trim grace the interior and if that wasn’t enough, the Jag even smells as if it’s a new car, not one that is 34 years of age.

The seats, front and back are in excellent shape and show no signs of any wearing, even in high traffic areas such as the side bolsters. Behind the two front seats, tucked into the headrests are two reading lights that are a nice addition, especially if you have the pleasure of being chauffeured at night.

The headlining, carpet, floor matts and door cards are inline with the rest of the vehicle and show very little signs of any wear or fading that we saw. We are informed that all the electronics within the vehicle are working as they should do. The windows go up and down without fuss as does the sunroof. An important feature in the 90’s as air conditioning was still relatively new, of course, being the epitome of luxury at the time, the Jag came specified with both.

Mechanical

From looking over the engine bay, everything appears to be in good order, with no signs of any leaks that we could see. The Jaguar starts instantly without hesitation and idles well with no unwanted noises, blue or white smoke exiting the exhaust. We are informed that it selects gears well and is an absolute pleasure to drive.

History

The car has been very well maintained and looked after over the years. We counted approximately 12 service stamps in the book from Jaguar and specialists. There is a vast amount of paperwork that varies from receipts to MOT’s. Throughout the years there has been a vast expenditure to ensure that the car has been kept in the best condition that it can be, both mechanically and visually.

Summary

If you’re in the market for a pristine British automotive icon then you should look no further. With low miles, excellent bodywork and an equally excellent interior, this has to be one of the cleanest XJ6’s to grace the UK market at this time.
