“ UK spec. with service history from new. ”

Xenon head lamps, front and rear parking sensors, 19” Custom alloy wheels, full extended Charcoal Ruched leather trim, radar assisted cruise control, SatNav, heated seats etc etc.

Background

The third-generation Jaguar XJ, or X350 as it was known internally, was launched in 2003. Fitted with a range of V6 and both naturally aspirated and supercharged V8 petrol engines, Ford also donated its 2.7-litre V6 diesel for those for whom frugality was the priority.

Featuring a bonded and rivetted aluminium monocoque chassis that is both 40% lighter and 50% stiffer than that of the outgoing model, the styling of its aluminium body panels is a gentle development of the rounded, hooded-headlight style that had become the XJ-range’s signature look. Both short- and long-wheelbase versions were available to order depending on whether agility or decadence was your aim.

All are fitted with a multi-link, four-wheel computer-controlled adaptive air suspension, which means the X350 handles as well as it rides; with a top speed of 155mph after passing 62mph in 6.6 seconds, the 294bhp 4.2-litre V8 you see here really is the epitome of the Grace, Space, and Pace that had been embedded within the Coventry firm’s DNA for half-a-century.

Overview

Finished in Liquid Silver Pearl with the extended Charcoal leather interior, ‘LK56 UAC’ is a Sovereign that could be a poster child for the benefit of living a life without encountering winter road salt.

It’s clearly lived its life with fastidious curation too, but this is pretty much the norm for one-owner-from-new cars – even if the fact that that care is backed up by some hefty paperwork is less usual…

It was also built to full UK specification, so you get to enjoy goodies such as Xenon headlamps, front and rear parking sensors, radar-assisted cruise control, 19-inch custom alloy wheels, heated seats, and satellite navigation.

Exterior

Of course, the aluminium body rules out the sort of rust and rot that plagued older Jaguars, but there’s still a lot that could have gone wrong in the seventeen years since this one rolled off the production line.

Could have but hasn’t because it still presents beautifully with ultra-tight and consistent shutlines, perfect panel alignment, and a distinct absence of the sort of dents, dinks, and scrapes that most cars collect over the years.

Even the corners of the bumpers and the door mirror casings are free of marks; no parking-by-touch here, something the front and rear factory-fitted parking sensors will have helped prevent.

The Liquid Silver Pearl paintwork is in an excellent condition too and gives the car a hewn-from-solid look that is completely on brand given the car’s construction.

There’s enough (very good, even the exhaust tailpipes are practically unmarked…) chromework for the X350 to tip its hat to its prestigious ancestors but not enough for it to look like a parody of a 70’s classic.

The 19-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels help reinforce the Sovereign’s modern credentials, and they’re free of scrapes, scuffs, and other kerbing damage. The centre caps, which feature a silver ‘growler’ on a black background, are excellent.

Just as importantly, the wheels are fitted with a matching set of Dunlop SP Sport tyres, all of which have good tread and are date-stamped 2022.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly.

The lamp lenses are undamaged and sparkle like jewels, the badges are unsullied by time, and the chrome honeycomb radiator grille is both straight and imposing.

There is, therefore, nothing that the new owner need worry about.

Interior

The cabin is a winning combination of richly coloured and beautifully figured wood and Charcoal leather, a combination you might think would look commonplace but is actually stunning in this pairing.

All four of the leather seats are heated and the centre panels of all four are ruched. Again, on paper this sounds like a bit of a 70’s cliché but it actually works very well; they’ve clearly got some clever folk over at the JLR design studio, folk who understand the importance of acknowledging tradition while not compromising their brand’s new-found modernity.

There is room for a third person in the middle of the rear seat but better, we think, to pull down the vast armrest and enjoy the better-than-average legroom on offer. The Sovereign is, after all, a luxury car.

Including the boot, which isn’t only vast but as beautifully trimmed as everywhere else. It plays host to the CD multichanger, the space-saver spare wheel, the factory tool kit, and what looks like a recent battery.

As for the toys, it’s got automatic wipers and headlamps, radar-assisted cruise control, sat-nav, front and rear parking sensors, electric windows and mirrors, a Bluetooth-enabled sound system, and more including extended leather.

We are told that everything works as it should.

Which means there is nothing whatsoever to do other than to revel in beating the system by buying such a prestigious car for so little money.

Mechanical

The seller tells us that the naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 engine starts, idles and revs as it should. He also tells us that it drives “exceptionally well, with no faults, warning lights, or rattles.”

It really doesn’t get any better than that, does it?

As for the condition of the engine bay, if you’ve been paying attention you’ll already have guessed that it’s both clean and very nicely presented.

History

The Jaguar’s MoT certificate is valid until May 2025, and it was issued with no advisories.

The seller informs us a new headliner has just been fitted. The car will also be fitted with new number plates and comes with 2 full keys.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear bar the marker for being an imported car.

Current road tax is £345 annually and the insurance premium is as per any UK Manufactured RHD example with no loadings.

The history file also contains the export certificate, the Japanese auction listing assessment, a UK V5, and a letter from the DVLA dated the 24th of June 2024 confirming the Jaguar has been registered here in the UK.

It also has the full Jaguar book pack and, if Google Translate can be trusted, 16 pieces of paperwork to confirm it’s been regularly serviced and tested in Japan. As aficionados will know, it’s unusual for cars to arrive here with their paperwork as it’s usually redacted (if you’re lucky) or, more usually, simply binned.

Summary

The X350 series of cars give all the benefits of the classis Jaguar XJ models alongside truly 21st century dynamic ability.

Nor is it pace to the exclusion of all else because the 4.2-litre V8 is not only very fast, the model also delivers superlative handling and ride.

You might also think it’s a bit of a bargain as prices for leggy, older cars are ridiculously – and temptingly - cheap.

This is not one of those cars. In fact, our guide price of between £10,000 and £14,000 makes it very far from the cheapest you’ll find on offer.

But, like you, the market prizes the very best cars appropriately, so any premium you pay now may come back to you, possibly with interest, when the time comes to let it go.

Still not convinced? In that case you might be pleased to hear that the seller has enough faith in his car to offer it without reserve, so it’s going to sell from the very first bid. Any inspection by AA, RAC or specialist, along with a test drive is welcome prior to auction end.
