“ Very Smart Example - ULEZ Compliant - Low Miles ”

For some the X358 encapsulates the ultimate development of the original 1968 Jaguar XJ6 concept and ethos.

Background

The Jaguar XJ range has been much admired and desired by drivers demanding sporting credentials from their saloons since the first XJ6 hit the streets in 1968. Initially known for being the last Jaguar saloon to benefit from direct input from Sir William Lyons, Jaguar’s founder.

Some 35 years and 800,000 XJ saloons later, the X350 model was launched to become the third family of XJ saloons. The X350 bought the Jaguar flagship bang up to date with a host of innovations and state-of-the-art construction methods. The aerospace-based aluminium bodyshell, for example, was a pioneering construction method for cars at the time. Exotic and space age materials such as magnesium, military-grade epoxy adhesives and boron steel for rivets were also used.

A 2007 facelifted model provided a late life update for the car and, confusingly, became known as the X358. By this time, however, development of the all new XJ X351 was well underway and slated for arrival in 2010. As such a “swansong” model was deemed appropriate for the X358 to provide a well-deserved last hoorah for the outgoing car. That model was the Portfolio to be distributed in strictly limited numbers – 150 for North America, 100 for the UK and only 50 for the rest of the world. The Portfolio took the already hugely specified Super V8 and added around $10,000 worth of additional kit.

For those looking for the ultimate, most luxurious and best developed version of the much-loved Jaguar X350 there can only be one choice. The Portfolio.

Overview

The X358 Portfolio was only available for the 2009 model year marking the last year of production before the X351 took up the mantle in 2010. As such this car hails from that year.

From the Castle Bromwich factory the car was shipped directly to Japan to be distributed and sold through the Jaguar dealer network there. The Portfolio then spent its life on the salt-free roads and in the benign climate of Japan until 2022. At that point the car was imported to the UK by a respected and experienced Jaguar specialist dealer.

On arrival in the UK the car was brought up to full UK specification. This includes provision of full-sized number plate plinths, an MPH speedometer face, UK satellite navigation maps and radio spectrum. Additionally, the car was thoroughly checked by Jaguar specialist technicians on arrival, it was fully registered in the UK (December 2022) and an advisory free MoT obtained.

The body work has been treated to a four-stage preparation process finishing off with a ceramic sealant. All interior leather has been professionally cleaned and fed with quality hide food. This ultimate X358 is now ready to use and enjoy by its lucky second UK owner.

Exterior

Ian Callum, who was Design Director of Jaguar at the time, oversaw the design of the X350 and was keen not to throw the baby out with the bath water. He admitted himself that the X350’s “proportions, stance and obvious dynamic quality clearly display that all-important Jaguar DNA and give it real presence on the road." It was all about evolution and not revolution at Jaguar, after all.

This example has clearly benefited from spending its life up to 2022 in Japan. No road-salt is used in Japan and the majority of the country enjoys a dryer and more benign climate than Western Europe. As such this XJ is reported to be entirely rust free and in nearly unmarked condition. It presents very well indeed in its original Celestial Blue Mica Pearl livery. We note the bonnet doesn't quite sit as flush as it should and the front grill is slightly wobbly.

The front of the car features a chromed Jaguar leaper. Zenon headlamps with individual washers, front fog lamps and sporting looking upper and lower mesh grills are fitted. The X358 Portfolio exhibits minimal chrome helping to lend it a sophisticated and stealthy look. What is featured, to the wing mirror backs, window surrounds and the boot trim, is all in pristine condition. The aluminium of the signature wing vents is equally well presented. A discreet Portfolio badge is paired with an XJ item on the boot lid below an equally discreet lip spoiler. All cabin glass and light lenses are clear and un-fogged and free from imperfection.

As part of the exclusive Portfolio package the car sits on 20-inch Selena alloy wheels. These multi spoked items are in pristine condition and fitted with black Jaguar leaper centre caps. The wheels are shod in a matching set of quality Pirelli tyres in 255/35 configuration.

Interior

Jaguar are acknowledged masters of the “special occasion” cabin. The standard of fit and finish is very much the equal of the high-class materials used. This is especially true in this ultimate Portfolio model, a reminder of which greets you in the form of aluminium, illuminated Portfolio embossed kick plates in the door shuts.

This XJ’s cabin is awash with Portfolio specific Navy leather with Barley piping paired with copious accents of dark oak veneer. The front seats are generously bolstered with central perforated panels. Jaguar leaper emblems are embossed into the headrests and the seats are fully electrically adjustable, heated and cooled. A seat memory function is also present which is paired to the electrically adjusted pedal box.

The rear cabin is equally well presented and trimmed in the same exquisite way. A centre armrest folds down and, when opened, reveals cup holders and felt lined storage. The rear seats are also heated for optimum comfort and convenience and also feature the embossed leapers to the headrests. Veneer fronted fold down picnic tables are fitted for the outer two rear passengers. Privacy is assured by an electrically operated rear window screen and manual side window blinds.

The dashboard is fronted with oak veneer which sits between leather trimmed and stitched upper and lower panels. The white on black gauges sit in a hooded binnacle which, in turn, sits behind the original four spoke multifunction leather steering wheel. The centre console houses the big control screen and numerous other switches. The control screen manages the functions of the dual-zone climate control, satellite navigation and the 320W music system.

A Champagne Alston headlining is fitted, and the complementary blue woollen carpets are in a fine and original condition. The carpets are protected with Jaguar embroidered mats with contrasting edge binding. The door cards are finished in double stitched leather and oak veneer. The large boot is finished in the original, hardwearing grey carpet. This is also home to the satellite navigation DVD reader and the multi-CD changer. An unused looking space saver spare wheel is housed under the floor together with original jack and tools.

As a high-specification luxury saloon the Portfolio is generously equipped. Refinements include double glazed cabin glass, Bury Bluetooth with music stream facility, speed limit control, cruise control, auto lights and auto wipers. An electric glass sunroof is present with retractable shade and a classy aluminium gear shifter and aluminium gear shift surround are fitted.

Mechanical

The Portfolio features the tried and tested 4,196cc AJ34 V8 engine. This is sufficient to produce 296 bhp and nearly 247 Ib-ft of all important torque. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a six speed ZF automatic transmission. Despite this being a large car, its aluminium unibody construction helps keep the kerb weight on the sensible side. As a result, this is a luxury car that could still show a clean pair of heels to the vast majority of others. The 0-60 mph sprint was originally dispatched in around 6.5 seconds and the top speed was pegged at a limited 155mph.

The under-bonnet presentation appears to be flawless with all expected data plates and workshop alerts in place. Even the original under bonnet insulation is in fine fettle. The underside looks clean and straight and almost completely faired in with protective covers.

This is a remarkably low mileage example of the X358, and its condition suggests diligent and attentive care and maintenance throughout. Additionally, the car was thoroughly checked by Jaguar specialist technicians on arrival giving it a clean bill of health to go along with that advisory free MoT.

History

The current V5 in the name of the owner is present, detailing him as the first UK keeper. The car currently holds an advisory free MoT which is valid until October 2023. Two Jaguar keys are also included.

Summary

For some the X358 encapsulates the ultimate development of the original 1968 Jaguar XJ6 concept and ethos. Beloved by purists as the last Jaguar saloon to benefit from the direct input of “Mr Jaguar,” Sir William Lyons. For those that agree that the later X351 marked a departure from this lineage, the 2009 Portfolio model is the ultimate expression of Sir William’s vision.

This example is a compelling proposition, too. Its Japanese life has translated into a very low original mileage example in a condition that is very hard to replicate with UK cars of the same vintage. Everything has been attended to by renowned Jaguar specialists meaning that the new owner can enjoy the car without any nagging worries or concerns. With so few Portfolios every produced be sure not to miss this opportunity to own the ultimate X358.
