Background
The Jaguar XJ range has been much admired and desired by drivers demanding sporting credentials from their saloons since the first XJ6 hit the streets in 1968. Initially known for being the last Jaguar saloon to benefit from direct input from Sir William Lyons, Jaguar’s founder.
Some 35 years and 800,000 XJ saloons later, the X350 model was launched to become the third family of XJ saloons. The X350 bought the Jaguar flagship bang up to date with a host of innovations and state-of-the-art construction methods. The aerospace-based aluminium bodyshell, for example, was a pioneering construction method for cars at the time. Exotic and space age materials such as magnesium, military-grade epoxy adhesives and boron steel for rivets were also used.
A 2007 facelifted model provided a late life update for the car and, confusingly, became known as the X358. By this time, however, development of the all new XJ X351 was well underway and slated for arrival in 2010. As such a “swansong” model was deemed appropriate for the X358 to provide a well-deserved last hoorah for the outgoing car. That model was the Portfolio to be distributed in strictly limited numbers – 150 for North America, 100 for the UK and only 50 for the rest of the world. The Portfolio took the already hugely specified Super V8 and added around $10,000 worth of additional kit.
