Background

The Jaguar Mark X served as Jaguar’s flagship saloon car from 1961 to 1970. It began its life as the Mark X before being renamed to the 420G during a refresh and was built primarily to serve the United States market. Jaguar hoped the vehicle would appeal to heads of state, diplomats, and movie stars thanks to a number of engineering improvements geared towards making the vehicle a luxury success.

Overview

The Mark X received unitary bodywork and independent rear suspension. The car also received the engine from the E-Type, as both cars were announced simultaneously. All of these advancements together gave the Mark X an impressive top speed and fantastic handling for less than half the price of the competing Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

Exterior

The Mark X is well known for its stately appearance both inside and out. Painted in British Racing green and featuring a gold pinstripe, this Mark X looks excellent. The paint is in fair condition, but it is not perfect. There are no major scratches or dents, but there is a chip in the paint on the roof of the car. The chrome around the car is straight, but the front and rear bumpers either need to be polished or completely redone. More concerning is the bubbling in the paint. There is only a small bit behind the rear wheel on the driver’s side, but on the passenger side, several areas are bubbling. Both sides of the rear wheel, heavily on the rear door, and minor amounts on the front door. All glass panels are clean and free of chips or cracks, and the wheels and tires both look to be in decent shape.

Interior

The inside is natural leather with wooden inlays and is in good shape! The inlays in the doors and dashboard are all healthy and have no major chips or scratches to speak of. The steering wheel is clean and all the gauges that lay behind it are easily readable. It would appear that a former owner had a JVC stereo unit installed for some added modern convenience. Both footwells up front are clean, but the carpets in each have a tough time fitting into their respective positions. The leather front seats are in great shape. Some of the material has loosened up due to usage, but not enough for any real creasing to begin. The leather appears to be clean and there are no obvious holes or tears in the material either. All trends continue in the rear compartment. Wooden inlays on the doors appear healthy and unbothered, seats are lightly used at best with no holes or tears, and the carpets are clean but still have a slightly awkward fit. However, the wooden inlays on the seatbacks do have one damaged area. Behind the driver’s seat there do appear to be three quarter-sized chips at the top of the wooden inlay. Overall, this interior is in great condition, and very little work will be needed to take the inside of this Mark X to the next level should the winner choose to do so.

Mechanical

We are happy to report that there is no major damage hiding underneath the vehicle. The frame and floorboards are solid, the exhaust aside from the tips exhibits minor discoloration, and the suspension components are all in proper order. Under the hood, things are significantly cleaner, and everything appears to be in its proper place aside from the battery.

History

There is a Production Record Certificate for this Mark X, which gives us quite a lot of information. The car rolled off the production line on January 5th, 1966. It was originally painted Opalescent Dark Green and featured a Suede Green interior. It was shipped to New York on January 21st, 1966, and the first owner brought the car home to Cincinnati, Ohio. By 2008 the car had made its way to Sarasota, Florida, and the seller purchased the car there in June of 2010.

Summary

Overall, we believe this Mark X to be a solid vehicle. The exterior has its bubbling issues, but thanks to the undercarriage photos we can see that the bubbling has not affected any of the vehicle’s underlying architecture. The interior is fantastic and the winner, should they decide to keep the car as a driver, will not need to do any work inside the car. The Jaguar Mark X is a handsome stately vehicle, and today’s example has plenty of stage presence with its wonderful British Racing green paint. Solid condition from top to bottom aside from the bubbling make this car a fantastic driver or an easy project, making us confident that this Mark X will have no problem finding a new home with its $10,000 - $20,000 estimate.
