Background

Enzo Ferrari once said the 1961 Jaguar E Type was the most beautiful car of all time, and most of humanity would agree. The Jaguar E Type is a sports car that came in a number of body styles, coupe, roadster, and 2+2, manufactured from 1961 to 1975. The combination of fantastic styling, exquisite performance, and competitive pricing quickly made the E Type world famous, and then, an icon.

Overview

Series 3 E Type’s like today’s example, were built from 1971 to 1974. Series 3 E Types received numerous upgrades. Chief among them, was the introduction of a new 5.3L V12 which came with four Zenith carburetors and lowered the 0 to 60 time to less than seven seconds. The wheelbase became longer than previous generations, allowing for expansion in every direction, and a much roomier cabin as a result. The Series 3’s exterior was also refreshed, the car can be identified over other generations by the following: the cross slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tires, four exhaust tips, and a ‘V12’ badge on the rear. The coupe body style was discontinued, leaving only the convertible and 2+2 bodies.

Exterior

This E Type is Jet Black. This Jag shows nicely, but there are still some flaws around the outside. There are two small scratches on driver’s front quarter panel, plenty of paint chips in the gap between the hood and the body on both sides of the car, and some chips around the edges of the driver’s door. The driver’s side rear quarter panel does have some bubbling in the paint, though the cause of this is uncertain. The single rear view mirror outside the car is in good condition, but absolutely needs to be polished in order to match the front and rear bumpers. Overall, the exterior is clean, but not without imperfections.

Interior

The leather insides of this E Type are black as night. Both front seats have their fair shar of creasing, but it appears that no damage has arisen from this. However, the stitching at the edge of the seat seems to be coming undone, and there is a small tear in the leather seat back. Both the passenger seat and rear bench are in good shape and show no holes or tears. The dashboard is clean, and all of the gauges are easily readable. The leather wrapped steering wheel is in good condition. The headliner is clean but appears to be coming loose at the corners. The carpets would benefit immensely from a deep cleaning, but don’t appear to have any actual damage.

Mechanical

We are pleased to report that the underside of this E Type is not hiding any major damage. Surface corrosion does appear to be present, but nothing is aggressively decaying. The front skid plate appears to have the most of it, and the exhaust is slightly discolored in some areas but that’s about it. There are plenty of chips in the paint inside the engine bay, but mechanically speaking, everything appears to be in order.

History

The seller acquired this car in July of 2012.

Summary

The Jaguar E Type is a wonderful automobile. Built to seat 4, it is the most capable, and Series IIIs have undergone the most revisions. It is the most refined version of the E Type produced by Jaguar. This particular Jag’s exterior is in relatively good shape, as is the interior. Some light restoration work could easily make this car competition ready, and even less effort than that will make this car a wonderful cruiser.
