Background

Enzo Ferrari once said the 1961 Jaguar E-Type was the most beautiful car of all time, and most of humanity would agree. The Jaguar E-Type is a sports car that came in a number of body styles, coupe, roadster, and 2+2, manufactured from 1961 to 1975. The combination of fantastic styling, exquisite performance, and competitive pricing quickly made the E-Type world famous, and then, an icon.

Overview

This 1973 E-Type is a Series III. Introduced in 1971, the Series III E-Types received a number of modifications over the previous two generations. A new 5.3L V12 was equipped with four Zenith carburetors, increasing the output to 272hp, and making it possible for the car to go from 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds. The coupe body style was discontinued, with only the convertible and 2+2 versions left to carry on. A new, longer wheelbase increased space in every direction. Series III E-Types can be easily identified by the large cross-slatted grille, flared wheel arches, wider tires, quad exhaust tips, and a V12 badge on the rear.

Exterior

This E-Type was done in silver. All around the car the paint is in nice condition, that being said there are some flaws, but most are minor. The paint is chipped in a few areas mainly around the driver’s door. There is also some bubbling at the bottom of the driver’s door and on the driver’s rear fender. The rubber seal around the windshield is cracking at the top and bottom. Most of the chrome is clean but some areas like the headlight housing and door trim would benefit greatly from some polishing. The front license plate mounts are bent totally out of shape and are mostly corroded, although corrosion doesn’t seem to be occurring anywhere else on the exterior.

Interior

The inside of this E-Type is black everywhere. The black leather seats up front are creased from average use, but the driver’s seat is almost starting to crack in some areas. The dashboard and gauges are clean, as is the wooden steering wheel. The rear bench is clean, has no holes or tear, but does show some creasing. The door panels are clean but both armrests are in rougher shape than the rest of the panels. The leather floor of the trunk is just barely starting to come loose at one end. As for the rear hatch, the leather panel inside is starting to separate from its adhesive. This E-Type’s interior is a little rough around the edges, but no major work will be necessary to get it back to show-quality condition.

Mechanical

The underside of this E-Type is clean. It harbors no major damage and corrosion is surface level at best. All of the parts underneath are tidy, and no area raises any red flags. The entire exhaust system is clean as are all of the visible suspension components as well.

History

Based on the documents available to us, we believe the seller acquired this vehicle in January of 2013. However, we do have a Production Record Trace Certificate. It tells us that the car rolled off the assembly line on June 4th, 1973. The car was Silver, as it is now, but it originally had a dark blue interior. 16 days later on June 20th, 1973, the car was sent to British Leyland, New York. From there its travels are a mystery until it found itself under the ownership of the seller in 2013.

Summary

The Jaguar E-Type is a wonderful automobile. Built to seat 4, it is the most capable, and Series IIIs have undergone the most revisions. It is the most refined version of the E-Type produced by Jaguar. The silver paintjob looks wonderful, and the black interior is ready for use or only a hop, skip, and a jump away from being ready to compete.

The Market by Bonhams is pleased to offer this E-Type 2+2 for online auction with no reserve at an estimate between $25,000 and $40,000.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
