Background

Unveiled at the London Motor Show in October of 1966, the Jaguar 420G was a continuation of the Mark X, which was sold between 1961 and 1966.

Not to be confused with the smaller Jaguar 420 Saloon based on the S-Type, the ‘G’ featured numerous small aesthetic changes compared with the MK X, including a redesigned front grille with a vertical bar, side indicators on the front wings, and a chrome strip along the side, though this was often omitted from two-tone paint cars in order to ‘clean-up’ the appearance.

Mechanically, the 420G - the ‘G’ apparently means ‘Grand’ - was virtually identical to the Mark X, retaining the XK inline-six engine which, from 1966, had expanded in capacity to 4.2-litres.

One perhaps unsurprising fact about the enormous Mark X/420G is that it was the largest car Jaguar built in the 20th century, with only the X350 XJ of 2003-2009 coming remotely close to its proportions in the 21st century.

This LHD auto 1967 Jaguar 420G (VIN: GID77318BW) comes to us with no history or service records.

We know that it was living in Paris in 2009. Otherwise, we have no idea where it was or what it was doing before 2011, when it entered the vendor’s static display collection.

Today, the odometer reads 27,847 km.

The car seems to us to be in very good overall cosmetic condition, and although it’s not perfect, we’re of the opinion that it could be returned to its former grandeur without too much time, money or effort.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are good and that the vehicle has plenty of structural integrity.

Exterior

This elegant car has a great deal of bodywork (it’s about the size of a cruise ship), and most of it is in very good condition.

There are no significant bumps, dents or creases to the bodywork. The panels are straight and true.

In general, the cream paintwork is very good and still has plenty of shine. The shut lines and door gaps seem consistent and even.

The wheels are in good condition as is the chrome work, badging, lights, lenses and most of the exterior trim.

There are a few stone chips around the grille and headlights and on the bonnet below the windscreen.

When the doors are open you can see that some apparently superficial rust has crept into the seams around the central pillar between the doors, along the tops of the sills, and where the doors close against the bodywork.

Interior

The car’s interior is in very good overall condition and appears to be highly original and authentic.

There are no rips or tears to the seat upholstery, front or back, and the seats are supportive, comfortable and functional.

The wood and veneers on the dashboard, door cappings and rear picnic tables have survived the passage of time remarkably well.

The door cards are in good condition, as is the headlining, although it needs cleaning and looks rather grubby.

The carpets and mats are in decent condition, but the mat in the driver’s footwell is a little worn.

Some of the rubber trim around the doors has broken away and is hanging loose.

The instruments, steering wheel, column shift and handbrake all look fine.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

Mechanical

In general, most of what’s visible looks to have a good deal of structural integrity, although there is some flaking in one or two places.

The engine and engine bay appear to be clean and dry and, as far as we can tell, everything is in its right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

This car must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Any paperwork shown in the gallery is a facsimile and in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

We haven’t tried to start or drive the car so our understanding of it is somewhat limited.

In our opinion, this 420G is in fundamentally good condition, both inside and out.

Someone, somewhere, has looked after it with care for much of its long life.

Provided, of course, that the car’s structural integrity, engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of it, we think this car has more than enough underlying quality and integrity to more than repay the next owner’s investment of time and energy

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €20,000 - €30,000.
