Background
AM General had plans to sell a civilian version of its military-spec Humvee since the 1980s. However that plan only started to gain traction after Arnold Schwarzenegger started making demands for one after seeing a convoy of Humvees pass by while filming the box office hit, Kindergarten Cop, out in Oregon. His continued pressure on AM General led to the creation of the 1992 HUMMER H1, and the first two units produced were purchased by Schwarzenegger himself.
In 1999, AM General sold the HUMMER brand name to General Motors. While AM General continued to oversee production of the H1 civilian car, it was GM who brought the H2 and H3 to life.
The HUMMER H2 was introduced to the world by GM in 2003. While it was nowhere close to the H1, the vehicle's massive size was unprecedented when it was first announced, and it is still abnormally large by today's standards as well.
