Background

On April 15th, 1999, as a birthday present to itself, Honda gave us the S2000 named after its engine’s displacement, and carrying on the tradition from the S500, S600 and S800 roadsters of the 1960’s. Produced from 1999 to 2009 the Honda S2000 underwent a few changes but officially there are only two variants, the AP1 for the UK market and the AP2. Since production ended in 2009 the Japanese roadster has become a modern classic with prices rising significantly for good examples.

The GT 100 Special edition like the one presented in this auction was an end of production run special edition with only 100 being made. All 100 cars were presented in ‘Grand Prix’ white with a removeable hard top, graphite colour alloy wheels, aluminium gear lever, black badging and red leather.

Overview

The current owner has had this S2000 since new, purchased from the Honda dealership in Chiswick, it has had all the servicing and regular scheduled maintenance done at the same garage. The car has never wanted for any mechanical or body work outside of manufacture dictated maintenance and has been run mainly on less frequent longer trips not frequent shorter ones. The owner is a courteous one and the car has never been excessively revved or taken to redline unnecessarily. It has always been run with premium fuel too as per manufactures recommendations. The car is only now up for sale as the march of time requires a newer, less harsh riding car. This is a genuine, real-world example of a highly desirable car, one that has been used in accordance with its purpose and not hidden away wrapped in cotton wool.

Exterior

The exterior of the Honda is in good presentable condition, aside from a few marks here and there, that align with normal regular use this is a well-cared for example. There is a small mark on the rear passenger quarter and some of the wheels have some very minor curbing but other than these small issues the exterior is in great condition. The car even has its original Bridgestone Potenza tyres which look to be in great condition wearing evenly over the tread width. The Grand-Prix white colour, which was a special addition to the GT 100 cars is crisp and clean with little to no stone chips, scratches or scuffs.

All badging is in great condition as are the lights around the car. The shut lines and panels present very well with little indication to show the 13 years the car has spent on the road. The roof has no nicks or tears, looks tight and retains its shape; it is not known to leak and is hidden nicely underneath the tonneau cover when down. The electric mechanism works as intended and the rear glass screen is free from scuffs, crazing or worn, hazy patches.

The car also comes with the hard top from factory, matching in the body colour. The hard top fits beautifully and really adds appeal to the profile of the car.

Interior

In the cabin of the S2000, the special addition spec red leather seats are in fantastic condition with no rips, tears or wear to any part. The bolsters and padding on both seats are in fine condition too retaining their shape and providing plenty of support whilst driving.

The leather steering wheel looks to be near new with very little, if any wear at all to the most common touch points. The dashboard behind it all works as intended and has a nice retro throwback in its styling. All buttons, knobs and dials around the car are in good condition also with none losing their painted-on lettering or showing any signs of malfunction. Behind the drop-down flap hides the radio head unit which is the original unit from manufacture, this car has been gifted an Ipod connective wire hidden in the middle arm rest.

The carpet in the car has some wear on the driver’s side but it is minimal and in line with the regular use over 13 years. The passenger side however is in fantastic condition. The door cards and switches on them are all in good condition with no scratches, scuffs or gauges from keys or other items. Finally, the scuff panels in the door shuts have some wear but it’s very minimal and certainly isn’t cause for concern, the plaque signifying the car’s provenance sits pride of place in the shuts, confirming this car is number 32.

The boot space is clean and free from damage and wear and retains the original tools which look untouched. There is also no evidence of any rust or dirt ingress to any of the door shuts, hinge areas or around the boot seals.

Mechanical

Heading underneath the car and it really is in remarkable condition considering the car’s use, aside from some light surface bloom on some nuts and bolts we really can’t fault the underside of the S2000 at all.

The frame rails are in great condition and seeing as this car still has its original tyres, its likely it has never been up in the air on jacks thus leading us to believe the jacking points are untouched. All the suspension components look great with no rusting or damage to be seen. All the rubber components also look to have held up admirably too.

Lifting the aluminium bonnet, the engine is a thing of beauty with the crackle finish red and black head cover acting like the cherry on the cake. The finish does have some paint cracking underneath the writing and might benefit from a refurb, but it is very minor and not likely to cause damage. Aside from that though all components in the bay look to be in good condition including all rubber hoses, wiring and mechanical items. Considering the regular, meticulous and familiar servicing this car has received its no huge leap to assume the engine is in fine fettle. Couple that with the legendary status of reliability this engine achieved and it’s a safe bet that the power plant is ready for many more happy miles.

History

The Honda, having been kept by only one owner, has a comprehensive and complete service history. The car comes with all its original manuals and salesroom items and the service book has been stamped by the original garage that sold the car at every manufacturer recommended interval. There is also evidence of all the MOTs in the file and the service receipts which are summarised below.

Summary

This is a genuine loved and used example of one of Honda’s legendary cars. It has had one owner from new and been serviced regularly by the garage that sold the car back in 2009. This car is an absolute gem and is a rarity on the roads. Following on from our earlier auction for the same car bidders also have a rare opportunity to bid on another example that has been lavished with the same amount of care, love and financial input.

S2000 values are heading north, much like many of the 90’s JDM heroes and it’s safe to assume that the GT 100 special edition of one of Honda’s greatest models should do the same. While we’re all for investments and buying with future prices in mind, considering just how good the S2000 drove, it would be criminal to lock this beauty away in a hermetically sealed garage. Whatever the winning bidder decides however, we are certain they’ll be happy with this purchase.

Our estimate for this car is £25,000 - £30,000.
