Background

The Honda Monkey was launched in 1961 as a small motorcycle, made for convenience over comfort, but being so small made them ideal for transportation. Honda used the original Z100 bikes in their own amusement park, it featured a Super cub engine and 5” diameter wheels. With the bikes such a hit, Honda decided to produce a road legal version, now called the CZ100.

These were produced in small numbers at the beginning, but by 1967 the Z250M, with a lowered seat and fold down handlebars, were available from most Honda dealers and so the craze started for the Monkey bikes. In 1974 the design changed into more of a mini motorbike, with a 50cc 4-stroke engine, single full size seat and a normal style fuel tank, and suspension to the front and rear. The Monkey has retained that look up until 2017, when the bikes were discontinued.

Overview

This Honda Monkey bike is a 2001 model, which was available in a choice of two colours, Candy Sapphire Blue or the one we have here, the quite rare Candy Ruby Red. These Candy colours were chosen as it gave the bike a more retro feel, and the Candy Ruby Red was made only for the Japanese market.

Exterior

As mentioned, the Monkey is finished in Candy Ruby Red, and the paintwork is in excellent condition. The 70’s style Monkey decal to the 4.5 litre fuel tank is in good condition. There are no obvious scratches or chips to mention, even under the underside of the mud guards is very well presented.

The speedometer reads in kilometers and has a reading of 7,814 kilometers. The chrome surround on the headlight, chrome handlebars and indicators are all in good condition. The lights to both the front and rear are free from any splits. There is also the chrome exhaust heat shield which is in good order.

Interior

With the Monkey only having had light use, the rubber grips are in good condition with minimal wear, and the seat is in excellent order, as are the foot pegs.

Mechanical

The 49cc, four-stroke starts up nicely with a kick start, and is reported to ride as well as it should. The wheels are 8” which are in excellent condition. These are fitted with quite thick block tyres that still have plenty of tread remaining. The aluminum engine and gearbox casings are nice and clean with no corrosion to mention.

History

A rare Candy Ruby Red colour produced for the Japanese market, plus it’s in excellent condition, with any wear you can find to be at the absolute minimum. Even items that usually wear, such as the tyres, are in extremely good condition. No longer produced, the little Monkey bikes are a great deal of fun, and this one is perfect for any collector of mini bikes or Hondas to add to his collection.

Summary

Produced for nearly 60 years, you would think there would be more available than there actually are. In fact, they are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially ones in such nice condition as this 2001 model.

Somewhat of a fashion icon in the 70’s, the Monkey is guaranteed to have the same effect now as you ride through the city streets. What are you waiting for?

We estimate this Monkey to get between €4,000 - €7,500.
