Background

The Ford Zephyr was an upmarket model manufactured by Ford of Britain from 1950 until 1972.

The Zephyr and its more luxurious siblings, the Ford Zodiac and Ford Executive, were the biggest passenger cars in Ford’s UK range until replaced in 1972 by the Consul and Granada.

A Zephyr Mk I (they were badged as the ‘Zephyr Six’ because of their 6-cylinder engines) driven by Maurice Gatsonides won the Monte Carlo rally in 1953, with a far more expensive and exalted Jaguar Mark VII coming second.

Later Zephrys and Zodiacs featured an uprated 2,994 cc V6 engine offering 140 bhp.

Chassis No: EOTTA12793.

Odometer: 22,513 km.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We understand from a few accompanying documents that the car was probably delivered new to Switzerland in 1953, where it seems to have stayed ever since.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1953 Ford Zephyr Six is a very well preserved, low kilometres example of the model.

Exterior

From most angles this car presents very well and looks to be in excellent overall condition.

The panels are straight and even, the bodywork is free of any significant flaws, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and even.

The green paintwork still has plenty of shine and lustre to it.

The trim behind the front bumper is frayed and missing in places at the intersection with the bodywork.

There is a hole (presumably for the aerial) on the front wing on the driver’s side.

A tiny spot of rust is visible in the intersection of the base of the driver’s door with the ‘B’ pillar.

There are some stone chips in places on the front and rear valances and on the sill sections below the doors on both sides.

Much of the exterior trim around the windows is frayed.

The lights and lenses are good, as are the wheels.

The chrome and badging is good in most places, including the main front grille and the bumpers.

Interior

The interior of the car is in equally good condition and is an almost time-warp reminder that this car is nearly 70 years old.

The brown upholstery has endured the passage of time surprisingly well and is in very good overall condition, although it would benefit from being thoroughly cleaned, as would the headlining and the rest of the interior surfaces.

The seats, front and back, look very decent.

The door cards, too, are in good order, although the bottom of the driver’s door card is scuffed and coming away from the door, as is its counterpart on the rear, passenger. Also, the section of carpet and trim below the driver’s front door card is a little frayed and grubby.

The carpets and mats are in decent condition.

The leather-bound steering wheel is very good, as are the dashboard and dials.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

The boot appears to be fine and contains a spare wheel and some tools.

Mechanical

The undersides of this car seem to have a good amount of structural integrity and there is nothing more than some superficial rust dust in evidence as far as we can see.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

We think this is an excellent example of the model and a car that has evidently been well looked-after throughout its long life.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of the car appears to be, then this fine classic could prove to be a very rewarding buy for its next owner.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €5,000 - €10,000.
