Background

Introduced in 2007 as the first Shelby Mustang since 1970, the S197 chassis GT500 topped Ford’s modular 32-valve 5.4 V8 with a supercharger for a full 500 hp. Designed and built in collaboration by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) and Shelby, fewer than 25,000 were made for 2007, 2008, and 2009 model years combined.

Only a fraction of that figure were sent back to Shelby for Super Snake conversion, a package offered from 2008 and available in two states of tune–600 or 725+ hp, the latter capable of 200 mph and 10-second range ¼ mile times right out of the box.

Overview

The auction car is equipped with the 725 hp package, as detailed in extensive Shelby factory documentation viewable in the accompanying photo gallery.

Hard numbers are difficult to come by, but most sources suggest fewer than 1,000 Super Snakes were converted for 2008, and Shelby themselves remain secretive on how many were fitted with 725 hp engines.

Exterior

Super Snake spec included custom carbon fiber side skirts, front splitter, cooling ducts for front and rear brakes, and a fiberglass ram-air hood held down by race-style pins.

Wheels are 20” Alcoa items also unique to the Super Snake, and the car sits squarely over them with a great stance as enabled by track-biased, Shelby and Eibach suspension components.

Shelby and Super Snake badging further drive the point that this is not your typical Mustang.

Interior

The cabin features Super Snake logo embroidered headrests. Super Snake sill plates, a Shelby I.D. plaque, and a central accessory gauge pod home to supercharger boost, oil pressure, and fuel pressure gauges. Carroll Shelby signature Super Snake floor mats are also included.

Mechanical

These full-on 725 hp cars utilized a twin-screw blower made by Mustang tuning specialist Kenne Bell, and supporting modifications included 6-piston Baer front brakes, various suspension upgrades, an aluminum driveshaft, and a 3.73:1 final drive ratio.

History

This car is offered by the family of its original owner and is sold with extensive documentation.

Summary

As one of the most powerful and exclusive semi-factory Mustangs ever made, this is not only an incredibly fast car, but also a very rare one.
