Background

The Mustang is a stunning vindication of Lee Lacocca’s vision and it continues today into its seventh generation. Debuted in 2005, the fifth generation Mustang reintroduced the world to styling themes from the fastback Mustangs of the late sixties and was in production between 2004 until 2014. The entry level model has an iron 210 bhp 4.0-litre V6 but the GT packs a 4.6-litre aluminium-block V8 motor which pushes 300 bhp. Originally designed by Sid Ramnarace in 2001, the fifth-gen was previewed at the 2003 North American International Auto Show and more than 20,000 went on to be sold across Europe.

Overview

Though this car may look like a GT500, it is in fact a 4.6 litre, automatic, left-hand drive, 5th generation Mustang from 2008. It has a mere 28,400 miles on the odometer and it is in fabulous condition throughout. The vendor bought this car back in 2016 after it was imported from the US through DBP back in 2008.

The vendor has not had any modifications done to the car; all work was carried out by the previous owner. This motor has had an LPG conversation which was carried out in 2014 at a cost of £2,500. The vendor confirms: “It drives absolutely faultlessly; the aircon is ice cold; everything works perfectly. The electric windows all good, the heated and electric seats work well. It’s beautiful – there’s no dings or scratches on it; the door shuts are immaculate and it’s polished up to the nines, and there’s no leaks”.

The vendor hasn’t clocked up much mileage over his seven years of ownership. Since he retired as an electrical / mechanical engineer and, due to covid, he didn’t really use the car, so it stayed in its heated garage. In his words: “I only really take it out when the sun shines”. He went on to say - because it’s such a beauty: “I’ve gone to a couple of the local car shows, and I always get free admission. I love the car, it’s my little baby. I don’t know why I’m selling it”. It’s fair to say he’s a reluctant seller, but his wife is nearing retirement and, he explains: "I love canal boats and I won’t be in the house for most of the summer. There’s no point having the mustang sat in the garage”.

Exterior

The sleek and aerodynamic bodywork of the Mustang is accentuated by its muscular stance, with a long hood and short rear deck that exude power and performance. At the front is a long, sloping bonnet with functional heat extractors, which add to its aggressive look and help to cool the engine. The grille is black and features the iconic Shelby GT500 Super Snake emblem. Then there’s the Shelby blue racing stripe which complements the glistening white paintwork to make this car a real head-turner.

Moving to the sides, the car has a distinctive profile. The car's wide stance is emphasised by flared fenders, which house 20-inch alloy wheels to make it look like a GT500. The car comes with Mustang SRT wheels, along with low profile tyres. The front tyres are brand new and the rear tyres have at least 6mm of tread. The rear of the car is just as impressive, featuring a fastback-style roofline and a raised deck lid.

Interior

The black leather upholstery complements the car's muscular and aggressive exterior. The seats are upholstered in black leather. The front passenger seat has a very light patina which is to be expected given that this car is in its 16th year. The back seats look barely used. The black and silver dashboard features a nice touch with the Shelby signature, and the centre console has an uncluttered design.

The metallic trim, like the vent surrounds, give a sporty touch throughout. All of the controls are easily accessible to the driver, aided by the leather-wrapped, three-spoked, multi-function steering wheel. The centre console features a sat nav; the door cards look good and the car comes with Mustang red-rimmed floor mats. The car comes with a spare run-flat under the boot floor.

Mechanical

This car comes with a 4.6litre, five-speed automatic transmission. It produces 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This car will shift from 0-60mph in just 5.3 seconds. This power output gives the Mustang strong acceleration and a satisfying exhaust note. It’s super clean under the bonnet – in the vendor’s words: “it’s clean enough to eat your dinner off the supercharger!” There is no evidence of leakage and the engine bay looks tidy. Everything is in its right and proper place.

History

This car has had four previous keepers. It has a comprehensive history up until 2016. After this point, the vendor took servicing into his own hands. This is because, in his words: “I don’t like anyone touching my cars. I can rebuild a car from scratch. I’ve changed the oil and filter every two years, even if I’ve only done 1000 miles”. The vendor explains he’s also recently changed the brake fluid and callipers. the car comes with an active MoT which expires on 11th July 2023. It’s MoT record shows that it’s been tested every year since 2011, except for 2020 and 2021. This might be because the car had only done 126 miles in the 3 years between MoTs! The car is being sold with two car keys.

Summary

This has got to be one of the most recognisable shapes in American motoring history and the wonderful thing is that whilst it may look like a million dollars, it certainly doesn’t cost it.

The movie-star appeal combined with the everyday practicality, decent comfort and reasonable size all make it a highly desirable car. As far as its obvious rivals are concerned this is the smallest and lightest, therefore the most economical and potentially quickest. This car has clearly been much loved and well looked after, so we think a prospective buyer will have to part with somewhere between £15,000 and £20,000 to take this car home.
