The Mustang’s secret might seem obvious now but the combination of a beautiful, sporting bodyshell allied to commonplace mechanical components was something of a revelation. Originally available in 1964 as notchback coupe or a convertible, the pretty fastback 2+2 arrived a year later.
The Mustang was one man’s vision, Lee Iacocca, and it continues with the sixth generation still being sold by Ford today.
The latest model was offered in right-hand drive form for the first time and considerably boosted the car’s appeal to those of us who drive on the correct side of the road.
Two engines were on offer, a four-cylinder EcoBoost unit lifted from the Focus ST and a full force 5.0-litre V8. Whilst the smaller engine is not lacking in performance, it misses out on that glorious V8 soundtrack. Buy in that form and there would always be the nagging doubt that you bought the wrong car.
With the V8, performance is brisk to say the least. How does a 0 to 60mph sprint time of less than five seconds and a top speed of 155mph sound?
Selectable drive modes come as standard in all Mustangs – Normal, Sport, Track and Snow/Wet. We like ‘Sport’ very much, but then you probably guessed that.
Manual or automatic gearboxes were available, our preference being for the slick six-speed manual. It is far more the true driver’s car.
