Background

New for 1959, the Galaxie began life as a style variation of the hugely successful Fairlane that had debuted in 1955 as rival to Chevrolet's Bel Air.

In creating one of its most iconic models, Ford's stylists hit upon the simple yet inspired idea of grafting the Thunderbird top onto the Fairlane body. The result was one of the most memorable automobiles ever to come out of Dearborn and the Galaxie was an instant hit, gaining the award of a 'Gold Medal for Exceptional Styling' at the Brussels World's Fair.

Ford's range-topping model, the Galaxie was one of the few American saloons of its day to make an impact outside the USA, thanks mainly to some stirring performances in touring car racing.

At the beginning of the 1960s Ford of America became heavily involved in NASCAR racing, concentrating their not inconsiderable resources on developing the Galaxie for the purpose. The Galaxie 500 two-door coupé was introduced in 1963 and was immediately successful in NASCAR racing.

Overview

This motor car is being sold as part of an overseas collection. It has been imported under the Bonhams temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to the lower rate 5% import tax if the car is to remain in the UK & purchased by a private individual. The 5% is calculated on the final selling price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, and proof that HMRC fees are paid. If the car is subsequently exported abroad within 30 days then these fees are refundable.

A company buying the car will have to pay VAT on the hammer price, as well as duty + VAT.

Lastly, there will be a nominal administration fee of £350 for processing the NOVA application, and payable direct to the shipping company. A completed and processed NOVA will provide you formal proof that all duties & taxes are paid in UK and thus allow you to register the vehicle with the DVLA.

In common with the majority of cars in this collection, this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

Although we have started the car and driven it a short distance, it will require recommissioning prior to full road use and is sold ‘as seen’. We cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality.

It is available for view and inspection at our HQ near Abingdon and we will be delighted to show the car to you and/or your appointed engineer.

We think this LHD auto 2-door hardtop Ford Galaxie 500 has the 390 cu in, 6.3-litre, 265bhp V8 ‘H’ engine.

The car was built at Ford’s assembly plant (now closed) in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1967.

The chassis number is: 7N55H123319.

The odometer reads 89,154 miles.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with an incomplete history and very few service records.

It does, however, have an out-of-date registration certificate from the state of Connecticut from 2015.

We know it was sold to a buyer in Maryland later that year and we’re assuming it was bought for the vendor’s collection within a year or two. It still has a headline description of the car - the kind you seen on dealers’ forecourts – stuck on the windscreen.

Although we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic status, we are of the opinion that this Ford Galaxie 500 is in very good overall condition – inside and outside.

Exterior

The bodywork is in really very good order and is largely free of any dinks, dents or creases of significance.

The panels are straight and even, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem entirely consistent and true.

The cream paintwork has retained much of its shine and quality and presents very well in general.

The brown vinyl roof looks very good, too, as do the wheels and chrome work.

The lights and badging look fine, and even most of the exterior trim had held up pretty well.

There’s a small paint chip next to the o/s/r light cluster, and some scuffs above the coachline on the n/s/r wing.

There’s also a small spot of flat paint on the o/s/r wing and a couple of paint chips on the o/s door.

The leading edge of the bonnet has a few paint chips and there’s a little bit of rust staining and bubbling on the bodywork below the boot lid.

The radio aerial is missing.

Interior

The cream and brown interior is certainly a match for the exterior in terms of condition, preservation and quality.

The vinyl upholstery, front and back, looks very good and, although in need of a thorough clean, any damage that we can see is limited to one very small hole in the driver’s seat.

The seats are comfortable and functional.

We’re guessing the brown carpets and ‘Galaxie’ embroidered mats are relatively new because, well, they look relatively new.

The door cards are in decent condition, but would benefit from being threatened with a chamois and some soapy water. The headlining has a hole in it under the passenger’s sun visor and a patch of discolouration towards the rear screen.

The top of the dashboard has a sizeable split in it and is coming away from its moorings at the base of the windscreen.

The instruments, dials and other fixtures and fittings all look to be a fine fettle, as far as we can see.

The binding on the steering wheel cover is unravelling.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

The boot, which contains a spare wheel and some tools, is in decent nick.

Keen-eyed observers will have spotted that the interior of this car has a dice theme.

The door locking buttons have dice on them.

There’s a pair of furry dice hanging from the rear-view mirror.

The key fob is another die of the furry variety.

We don’t know why – better informed Galaxie enthusiasts may well know better.

Mechanical

There’s some rust dust and flaking in evidence but, from what we can see, the undersides look to have plenty of structural integrity to them.

You’ll want to have a look for yourself and reach your own conclusions, obviously.

Everything in the engine bay appears to be clean, dry and in its right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with a service history or any records of work done beyond what is shown in the gallery.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Summary

We think this excellent Ford Galaxie 500 is in very impressive overall condition - both for its mileage and age.

It has clearly been well maintained and looked after over the years.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals prove to be in good working order, we think this could and should be a very fine example of the model.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of £6,000 - £10,000, plus Bonhams bond payment and £350 NOVA fee.
