Full disclosure.

We don’t know much about motor homes.

Sorry.

But we’ve got one here and we thought we’d let the people who built it say something.

“In 1996, Forest River founder Peter Liegl had a vision. He foresaw an RV company dedicated to helping people experience the joy of the outdoors by building better recreational vehicles. Today, we have grown to become one of the largest RV manufacturers in North America, producing class A and C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, camping trailers and destination trailers. From the new family just starting out in the world of RVing to the experienced full-timer, we offer something for everyone.

Forest River RV is a division of Forest River, Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway company, which produces recreational vehicles, pontoons, park models, buses, cargo trailers and commercial trucks.”

So, there you have it.

Overview

Forest River are, in effect, specialist RV coachbuilders.

In this instance, they’ve worked with the engine, mechanicals and stripped-out chassis of a Ford E-450, also known as a Ford E Super Duty.

The result of their efforts is this very capacious RV with a double bed, shower, cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave, lavatory, lots of furniture, plenty of TV and entertainment options, a slide-out section on the nearside, and all manner of external cubby holes containing all the cables, connectors, tools, ramps, etc., you’ll ever need.

There is more storage space inside than you’d find in the average 3-bedroom flat.

Much more.

This motorhome, or RV in US-speak, is powered by a 6.8-litre V10 Ford engine.

It has covered just 29,000 miles and has always been sparingly used, as evidenced by the fact that on the occasion of its 2011 MoT its mileage was recorded as 9,409.

We know that it has been employed as the mobile base RV for at least one motorsports team and that it would probably make a very decent job of serving in that capacity once again.

We can think of far worse places to spend some time on the outskirts of Goodwood, Le Mans Classic, Silverstone or some other circuit/event.

We might avoid taking it to any desert-based circuits though, for fear of invoking an overwhelming ‘Breaking Bad’ vibe.

In fact, it’s really very plush and well-appointed and seems to be generally in OK condition as far as we can tell, although there does appear to be some corrosion to contend with underneath the vehicle and the tyres will definitely need replacing.

This vehicle comes to us from a vendor who used it as a temporary home while work was being carried out on renovating a recently purchased country farmhouse.

We understand that, although currently under SORN regulations, this UK-registered vehicle starts, runs and mostly does what you would want it to, although it will need some basic recommissioning before it embarks on a new chapter of life out on the open road.

Exterior

It’s actually in pretty decent condition externally, if in need of a bit of TLC and a good scrub.

Being the size of the Queen Mary and probably occupying at least two post codes it has, inevitably, picked up a cosmetic scrape here, a dink there, and a scuff or two elsewhere.

Some of the trim at the bottom of the slide-out is looking a trifle ragged and there are a few patches of missing paint in places.

The wheels are in decent condition but the same cannot be said of the tyres.

Most of the exterior trim is intact and reasonable, as are the lights, awnings and badging.

The roof (and the skylights and vents on it) needs to be acquainted with some powerful cleaning and polishing products.

Interior

If you’re a fan of velour fabrics and variations on a beige colour palette, this could be just the RV for you.

The front cabin (for driver and passenger) seems fine and the seats are supportive, comfortable and, as far as we can tell, functional.

The dashboards, instruments and steering wheel all look to be in decent fettle.

The carpets and mats throughout are pretty good.

The main bedroom, though a little dusty and in need of a good clean, is basically fine, as are the shower, lavatory, galley and living areas.

A couple of the wooden cabinets in the main living/cooking/eating area are a little bashed about at the base, but certainly not to the detriment of their function or utility.

The main door to the living area is currently refusing to open from the outside, but will do so if approached from the inside via the front passenger door.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides appear to have a reasonable amount of structural integrity but there is some corrosion evident in places and most surfaces look, unsurprisingly, as if they belong to a vehicle that’s been static for quite some time.

No doubt you’ll want to see it yourself before reaching your own conclusion.

The engine and engine bay are clean, tidy and everything looks to be in its right and proper place.

History

This very low mileage vehicle doesn’t come with a service history or any record of work done

It does, however, come with a thick file full of instructional guides, user manuals, safety procedures and other useful information.

It doesn’t have a current MoT certificate.

Summary

We haven’t tried to drive the vehicle so our understanding of it is somewhat limited.

That said, provided that the vehicle proves amenable to light recommissioning, we think this is a great deal of machine/home/mobile base for what should be a pretty attractive price.

Snetterton or Castle Combe, anyone?

We’re confident to offer this vehicle for auction with an estimate of £20,000 - £30,000.
