Background
RS, it’s one of the iconic Ford brands and it signifies one thing: that the car’s going to be fast. In fact, it means more than one thing because handling, rally and race successes and a whole lot more are neatly tied up and implied in any RS bundle.
By the late Nineties Ford’s road car lot had become a touch sober, but in 1998 the new Ford Focus brought modernist lines and one very smart FWD driving experience to the party.
Four years later came the hallelujah moment that fast Ford fans had been praying for: the RS version. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produced 215bhp with a Quaife differential helping to keep that power on the straight and narrow, and big Brembo brakes lending huge stopping power. Bodywork came in Imperial Blue with O.Z. racing wheels topping off the racy exterior package; inside it was pretty standard Ford fare but you did get funky blue-striped Sparco seats.
On the performance front 0-62mph went by in 6.4secs and top speed hit 144mph. Not crazy by modern standards, but the boisterous manner in which it unleashed its wares was pure entertainment. The template had been set and each generation of Focus RS simply got wilder, and wilder.
The Mk2 arrived in 2008 with a 2.5-litre 5-pot engine good for 300bhp and lairy, aggressive styling that included a rear diffuser, bonnet vents and the option of a new colour: Ultimate Green.
Allow us to introduce you to one such example. Although, be warned it’s not for those of a nervous disposition as it’s been tweaked. How does 420bhp sound?
