Background

The 1940s and immediate postwar years marked a crucial turning point in the history of Ford Motor Company, with the founding family now firmly back in control with the ascension of Henry Ford II to the presidency in September 1945. While the existing prewar 1942 models continued with detail-oriented updates while the upcoming new 1949 passenger-car line was under development, Henry Ford II wisely ensured dealer showrooms continued to draw buyer traffic in 1946-48 with the glamorous new Sportsman Convertible and Station Wagon – both part of the top Super Deluxe series, with their rich structural wood bodywork the pride of Ford’s highly skilled Iron Mountain, Michigan craftsmen.

Overview

This show-quality 1947 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon was clearly the four-wheeled pride and joy of its late former owner, under whom it was restored and built with virtually no possible expense spared. The well-known Hot Rods and Hobbies of Signal Hill, California competed the build from 2018 to 2021 and according to the Seller, invoices are on file exceeding $95,000. In addition to its outstanding looks, this captivating “Woodie” is understood to have been fully sorted and delivers a reliable and comfortable experience.

Exterior

The unmodified body is handsomely finished in era-correct Blue Gray paint , complemented by richly finished wooden bodywork and paneling. Desirable accents include correct OEM trim and model identification scripts, plus gleaming chrome bumpers mounting bumper guards. Body-color steel wheels mount chrome rims, Ford-scripted chrome hubcaps, and period-style wide Whitewall tires. An OEM style padded roof, rear spare tire, and twin chrome exhaust tips add further curb appeal.

Interior

Built and appropriately updated for modern enjoyment, the interior is trimmed in era-correct Saddle leather upholstery , complemented by factory-correct wooden door panels, door handles, window cranks, and a faux woodgrain dash motif. A leather-wrapped “banjo” steering wheel atop a modern power-steering column and a factory-appearing instrument panel greet the driver. Striking, factory-type ceiling bows and paneling provide an irreplaceably authentic look. A billet floor shifter controls the modern GM automatic transmission. A factory dash clock, rare AM radio, and chrome speaker grille remain in place. Select updates include the all-season comfort of Vintage air conditioning and the safety of modern lap belts to the front and rear seats. Three-row bench seating allows friends and family to join the fun. Tan square-weave carpeting and floor mats with complementary Beige vinyl foot panels, plus twin sun visors complete the interior appointments.

Mechanical

Riding on a custom chassis with updated independent front suspension, this iconic Ford “Woodie” is powered by a new 6.2L LS3 V-8 Corvette engine, breathing out through a full-length dual exhaust system and paired with a GM 4L60 automatic transmission. Other highly desirable updates include precise rack-and-pinion power steering, power disc brakes with ABS, and a Ford 9-inch rear axle with a freeway-friendly ring and pinion.

History

As mentioned above, the vehicle was professionally restored and updated for the late prior owner from 2018 to 2021. As the Seller relates, the wagon has less than 5,700 miles since restoration and 500 miles since the updates were made. As offered, it clearly remains in excellent condition, requiring only an enthusiastic new owner and their family and friends to enjoy and appreciate it.

Summary

Clearly, this handsome Ford “Woodie” is a show quality-build with select modern upgrades, limited use, and complete sorting for equal measures of confident reliability and driving pleasure with an abundance of great classic looks and startling comfort. Additionally, this vehicle is exempt from California smog requirements and comes with a clean and clear California title document. Estimated $140,000 - $170,000.
