Background
Launched in 1936, the original Fiat 500 was the smallest mass-produced car of its time, designed to bring motoring to the masses and predating serious production of Germany’s Volkswagen. Unofficially but lovingly dubbed “Topolino,” translated from Italian as “Little Mouse,” the inexpensive and economical 500 was anything but, featuring handsome styling and deceptively rugged construction. Following the return to peacetime, the 500 was offered in restyled 500B form, succeeded from 1949 to 1955 by the 500C. Today, these wonderful Italian vehicles are catching the attention of astute collectors for their diminutive proportions, wonderful styling, and unquestionable importance to motoring history.
