Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ There are very few pedigree GT cars from this or any other era that are as accomplished and capable as a Ferrari 456M GTA. ”

We believe the car was originally a shade of gold known as Grigio Ingrid but has since been resprayed in the highly unusual (but, we think, very attractive) shade of Burnham Green Metallic, which is actually an Aston Martin colour by DuPont.

Background

"The first completely new car from the Modena manufacturer since the 348 of 1990 and arguably the most evocative front-engine coupé since the fabled 365 GTB/4 Daytona of the early '70s. Its ancestors read like a who's who in the Great Book of Grand Touring – 330 GTC, 365 GTC, 365 GTC/4 – and, for good measure, it was the last new project Enzo Ferrari saw before he died in 1988." – Autocar.

Not since the 412's demise in 1989 had Ferrari offered a '2+2', and when the 456 GT debuted at the Paris Salon in October 1992 it was obvious that the long-awaited newcomer eclipsed all Maranello's previous four-seat Grand Tourers.

Although new from stem to stern, the 456 GT incorporated elements familiar to generations of Ferrari cognoscenti - front-mounted four-cam V12, rear transaxle, tubular steel spaceframe chassis and all-independent suspension - while making an appearance for the first time were electronically-controlled adaptive suspension and a six-speed gearbox.

Essentially a de-tuned version of that powering the 550 and 575, the new 5.5-litre V12 unleashed no less than 442bhp at a lowly 6,250rpm yet remained smooth and tractable from idling speed to red-line thanks to its state-of-the-art engine management system.

F40 excepted, the 456 was the most powerful road car developed by Ferrari up to that time, yet despite delivering supercar performance this relatively unstressed engine has proven to be very reliable.

For the 456, Pininfarina worked its magic once more to create a subtly beautiful curvaceous body contrasting with the hard edges of its predecessor.

Although bereft of extraneous aerodynamic devices, the 456 remained stable up to its maximum of around 190mph, a figure that made it the world's fastest production four-seater passenger car.

Acclaimed on its debut, the 456's styling has not dated and is a tribute to Pininfarina's vision in creating one of most successful designs of modern times.

An air-conditioned interior, sumptuous Connolly leather trim, perfectly weighted power steering, and Porsche-rivalling build quality all combined to make the 456 GT a worthy competitor to Bentley, Aston Martin, and Mercedes-Benz in the luxury Gran Turismo marketplace.

An automatic transmission version, known as the 456GT A, became available for 1997 and then two years later the model was given its one-and-only makeover, re-emerging as the subtly restyled and improved 456M GTA.

Overview

VIN: ZFFWP50B000113910.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1999 LHD auto Ferrari 456M GTA comes with little paperwork beyond whatever photocopied documents are shown in the gallery section.

We haven’t tried to start or drive the car, so our appraisal of it is limited to its cosmetic appearance.

We believe the car was originally a shade of gold known as Grigio Ingrid but has since been resprayed in the highly unusual (but, we think, very attractive) shade of Burnham Green Metallic, which is actually an Aston Martin colour by DuPont.

It was imported new to the Middle East and entered the vendor’s collection in 2013.

Today, the odometer reads 27,760 kms.

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

Exterior

The bodywork is straight and devoid of any meaningful dinks, dents or other defects, and the paintwork is generally good overall.

The wheels are in fine condition, as are the lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings.

There are some scuffs on the passenger-side rear wing, and a few stone chips around the leading edge of the bonnet and the front valance.

The boot lid has a few black marks on it and some sticky residue from some removed aftermarket badging.

There are some scratches around the rear bumper.

We struggled and failed to completely close the boot lid.

The metal prancing horse on the front grille is a little out of shape at the base.

Interior

The inside needs a thorough clean and is pretty grubby and dirty.

But the beige leather upholstery is intact, front and back, and has little more than the odd mark, a few creases and one or two small nicks to show for its years of service.

The door cards are OK, save for the odd scuff here and there.

There are some cracks to the plastic on the driver’s side kick plate.

The headlining is hanging down on the passenger side.

As with many Modena offerings of this era, the car has succumbed to ‘sticky button’ syndrome. The Internet is awash with various remedies for this – you’ll just need to find the one that works for you.

The carpets and mats are decent. So, too, is the boot, which contains a spare wheel and the original leather tool case.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look to be in good condition and everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car seem to us to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

The car comes with the manufacturer’s EE certificate of conformity and a leather wallet containing various handbooks, manuals, the radio code and a copy of the original warranty card.

Unless otherwise stated, this car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever photocopied documents are shown in the gallery.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Summary

There are very few pedigree GT cars from this or any other era that are as accomplished and capable as a Ferrari 456M GTA.

We think this is a very good and attractive example of the model and it should clean up handsomely - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals prove to be amenable to recommissioning.
