Background

Built between 1985 and 1989, the Ferrari 328, an evolution of the trusted 308 platform from the 70s, differentiates itself from the latter thanks to the numerous mechanical and design modifications without upsetting its proven, winning formula. The last of the transverse mounted v8 engine cars to come out of the Maranello factory and equipped with a Tipo F105 CB 3.2l v8 engine, can be considered the final evolution of an iconic design that mesmerized most automotive enthusiasts.

Offered in two variants, "GTB", Gran Turismo Berlinetta and "GTS", Gran Turismo Spider (the letter y was not yet popular in the Italian language), the smaller Ferrari showcases Pininfarina's design aesthetics and the great craftsmanship of Carrozzeria Scaglietti.

The midship engine, capable of delivering 270hp, together with a 5 gears ZF gearbox and a respectable chassis make this Ferrari a car capable of offering an engaging and yet well-balanced driving experience.

Overview

The car on offer is a 328 GTB built in 1986, number plate AB288XX and chassis n° ZFFWA19B000061171. The odometer reads 40880 km, 4000 of which from 2004 to today. Its sharp lines, coupled with the subtle aerodynamic upgrades from the previous model that was Tom Selleck's weapon of choice in Magnum P.I, are the kind of shapes that overwhelmingly come to mind when one thinks about the Ferraris built in the 70s and 80s. The sound of this oversquare V8, with a bore of 83mm and a stroke of 73.6mm, doesn't resemble the guttural growls of its American counterparts. A refined study in chassis and vehicle dynamics that began in 1975 with the 308 and that ended, in 1985, with the new 328 completes the picture. The Ferrari 328 is not only beautiful and capable, but also a car that lets its driver fully enjoy for the Gran Turismo that it was meant to be.

Exterior

This car's exterior is in great condition and the well-known Rosso Corsa FER300/09 red paint doesn't need any work done to it. The Rosso Corsa from those years ages like fine wine, the more time passes the more it lets you appreciate its nuances.

The coachwork is almost pristine and shows no signs of repairs. The panel gaps are consistent and even the black accents of the front spoiler and side skirts are well preserved, aside from some minor retouches that are not uncommon on a car of this age and that sits so low from the ground. Both the front and rear emblems, together with those on the side that represent the car's designer (Pininfarina), add a touch of class that can be rarely found on modern vehicles, no matter how luxurious they are. The same can be said about the front and rear bumper grilles. At the front, clearly visible, there is a still shiny metal grille on which proudly stands, on its rear hooves, the prancing horse, once the banner of WWI Ace Francesco Baracca.

The rear spoiler is paint matched to the body work, a subtle difference from most 328s where it's matte black. According to our research some cars came like this from the factory to satisfy the customer's needs, at no additional cost so this may very well be the case for this car.

The wheels are the classic silver grey, 5 spoke Speedlines with their unmistakable design and are bolted to the hub by 5-wheel nuts with their chrome finish in good condition. Their solid shape, despite their, for the era, light weight is a welcome accent that truly help accent Pininfarina's design. Said wheels are shod with a premium set of RE002 Bridgestone Potenza tyres, 205/55r16 at the front and 225/50r16 at the rear.

The rear of the car is just as nice, with the well-known round taillights and all rear emblems well preserved. The taillights especially show no signs of hazing or opacification while the prancing horse and the 328 GTB model plate were incredibly left alone by father time.

Interior

When entering the car, the first thing that catches the attention, after the unmistakable Connolly leather scent, is how well preserved the interior is. The cream-coloured leather that covers both the seats and the centre console is free of defects or scratch marks, the stitching is clean and the headrests' prancing horse emblems, one of the first things that fall victim to use and ageing, are perfectly visible.

The door cards are clean and the carpet's wool, like the rest of the upholstery, are in good condition.

The dashboard, covered in fine black leather, is in perfect conditions as well and has no cracks or fading from exposure to UV lights.

The gauges are manufactured by Veglia-Borletti and the orange backlight (taken from the 288GTO), offers that vintage touch to an immersive driving experience. The Momo steering wheel, together with the "dog leg" shifter, with the first gear located where you'd normally find the second on most cars, complement this tasteful Italian recipe. The loud "clack" one hears when going through the iconic shifter gate lets the driver feel like an orchestra director who can set the pace of the good sounding v8 at will.

The pedal box and the fibreglass floorpan that's a common trait of the 308 and 328 family, are well preserved and require no further attention. Inside the front hood the spare wheel that shares the design with its wider sisters and the pannelling are defect free despite their intended usage as a front, unprotected, storage compartment. To report a part of the handle frame to open the rear bonnet is broken; however, this does not affect its functionality.

The pop-up headlights' linkage and the plastic rose joints show no signs of wear or cracks, a true rarity.

Finally, this 328 GTB is offered with its original tool bags and jack.

Mechanical

Moving on to the drivetrain and chassis, which are in good condition, we can admire what's one of the last "classic" Ferraris. Fiat bought a further 40% of Ferrari shares, holding 90% of the company, only in 1988. The beating heart of this model is the F105 CB engine, an evolution of the previous quattrovalvole found on the 308. 3.2 litres of displacement and a 90° V-8 configuration offer a power output of 270hp. The engine is in great conditions and works smoothly. There are no visible oil leaks and all its mechanical parts look clean and in perfect working order, just like its K-Jetronic injection system. Its ignition system is the Magneti Marelli MED 806A, a nice upgrade from what was found on the 308.

The 5 forwards gears plus reverse ZF gearbox lets the driver effortlessly row through the gears and is well set-up, a little detail that shows how well cared for this car has been. The same can be said about the clutch which doesn't slip and engages smoothly,

The mix of oval and square steel tubing that makes up the car's chassis is well preserved although there are some minor rust spots caused by road debris. The double wishbone suspension arrangement, at the centre of which stand four Koni "red" shocks (which few know that can be adjusted by removing the spring and compressing\twisting the shaft), could benefit from the replacement of the bushings which, being made of rubber, are subject to ageing despite the little road this car has covered in its almost 40 years of life.

The brakes are in good working order, just like the master cylinder that sits under the front wiper blades. Being a pre-abs model, this 328 GTB's braking system is extremely simple and thus very easy to keep up with maintenance wise.

History

Registered on February 7, 1986, the car was delivered new to its first owner in Sanremo. It was then sold to a lady from the province of Bolzano who kept it until 1990 before selling it to a passionate collector in the province of Vicenza. Five years later our GTB moved to Turin, where it was kept by three different owners from the same city. Finally, it was sold to the current owner.

The car comes with double set of keys, Italian papers, owner’s manual and brochure of the time. On 15/02/2022 the car benefited from the replacement of the complete clutch pack at the same time as a service at the Toni Auto workshop in Maranello.

Summary

This 328 GTB is a car that should be of interest to anyone who'd want to join the Ferrari family or add a good design piece, one that's reliable enough to be enjoyed regularly, to their collection. The small defects don't detract from the overall driving experience and enjoyment, a full service was done 3 years ago and the clutch has just been replaced. Being registered and certified as a vintage car through the ASI registry of Italy (Automotoclub Storico Italiano), one can be sure of this Ferrari's conditions given the amount of documentation required to be approved by said registry.
