Background

Few names in motorcycling are as evocative as Ducati. As Italian as a fine Chianti and as beautiful as a Michelangelo, Ducati is the two-wheel equivalent of Ferrari, largely because of its awkward ergonomics and a colour chart comprising one shade of red.

And incredible performance.

You see, the 900SS has a 904cc V-twin engine whose 84bhp has only 188kgs to propel, endowing the bike with a quarter-mile time of 14.1 seconds and a top speed of 140mph.

Throw in adjustable suspension, twin 320mm discs up front, fat, sticky rubber on 17-inch rims, and a pair of Mikuni carburettors, and you’ve got what many consider the perfect modern classic sportsbike.

The 900 SuperSport (for that is what the ‘SS’ stands for) even had a fan in Hunter S. Thompson, who wrote of his: “I was hunched over the tank like a person diving into a pool that got emptied yesterday. Whacko! Bashed on the concrete bottom, flesh ripped off, a Sausage Creature with no teeth.”

This may not be his finest work, but being able to say you own the same bike as the one he raved about would be pretty damned cool, wouldn’t it?

Overview

At the time, the 900 Supersport could have possibly been one of the best street bikes Ducati had ever produced. It was produced with parts borrowed from other models and didn’t take advantage of the latest technology which was available at the time. However, the combination of well-chosen parts and excellent engineering skills created the superbly balanced Supersport 900.

This 1993 original example comes to the market with just 7,558 miles covered in its 30-year existence. The bike's condition is excellent and looks to have spent several years in storage in the late 1990s up until 2011, when it was then used regularly, covering just a few hundred miles each year and taken for regular MoT tests.

Exterior

A fantastic all-rounder and capable of being ridden comfortably all day. The Supersport has a classic look of the early superbike era, and what a tremendous era it was!

As we take a look around the 900 Supersport, it is a true timewarp in original condition. We believe the paintwork to be original, with no areas suggesting otherwise. There are some light swirl marks which can be seen in bright sunlight, but these should be able to be reduced or removed by a professional detailer. The super sleek aerodynamic fairing fits like a glove, and the decals are in excellent condition. The front mudguard hugs the tyre nicely and has no damage; the upside-down forks look in excellent condition, with no tarnishing or corrosion to the aluminium or anodised finish. Headlights and indicators have a bright finish with no lens damage, and the windshield is in excellent condition with no signs of excessive scratches.

The fuel tank is in good condition with no dings or dents present, and the fuel cap is also nice and clean with no tarnishing to the aluminium. There is a Datatag decal warning people that the bike has been Datatagged.

At the rear, the pillion seat is covered, but this panel can be removed easily enough; the grab handle is in good order and has clearly not been used a significant amount. The rear light and indicators are free from splits or cracks, and the rear hugger is also in good condition with no damage.

Fitted with black wheels as standard, these are in excellent condition with no signs of corrosion. The tyres are both Michelin, which are like new and still have the small bobbles on the edges.

Interior

Sitting on the Ducati, the instruments have white faces, which are bright and clean, and the odometer shows just 7,558 miles. There is a tiny wear mark on the yolk where a key looks to have rubbed in the past, but this is very minimal. The switchgear is in excellent condition and has no wear to the lettering, and the grips are also in good order with no real signs of use.

The seat is excellent, with no sagging or damage to the material, and if you remove the seat, the original tool kit is in place. Items such as the foot pegs for the rider and pillion are in excellent condition as it is the gear lever rubber.

Mechanical

Fitted with a 904cc desmodue with belt-driven cams, the Ducati puts out around 84bhp at 7,000rpm. This has been slightly improved with a set of Mikuni flat slide carburettors. The bike starts up and runs with no issues reported by the vendor. The six-speed gearbox has a smooth change, and the Ducati pulls strongly through all the gears. A new chain and sprocket set was fitted in July 2018 at around 4,000 miles.

The cosmetics of the engine look in good order; there is a small amount of black paint on the casing, which has started to flake off, but generally, the engine and gearbox present very well and certainly don’t look 30 years old. The frame seems in good order, with no signs of anything untoward. All of the aluminium brackets for the footpegs and suchlike are in nice condition, with no tarnishing to them. The exhausts are the original Ducati set and look in good order; there is a small scuff on the left-hand can but nothing serious.

Twin 320mm discs with Brembo calipers at the front and a single 245mm disc at the rear bring the Supersport to a halt quickly and with no issues; there were also a new set of pads fitted in August 2019 which would have been at around 6,500 miles.

History

The Ducati comes with several previous invoices for parts purchased, and work carried out. Some of the invoices suggest the bike was given a recommissioning before coming out of storage in 2011 when it was starting to be ridden again. Several previous MoT certificates show how little the mileage has increased over the years.

Nice to see the original owner's handbook and service manual, and there are three keys included. The V5 is also there, and it shows four previous keepers. The bike was given an MoT on the 25th January which it passed with no advisories.

Summary

What's not to love about this 1993 Ducati 900 Supersport? It comes with just 7,558 miles covered in 30 years; the condition appears to be all original, making this an excellent opportunity for any die-hard Ducati fan or 90s-era sports bike enthusiast.

Take a trip down memory lane on this time-warp 1993 Ducati; it will be worth it!

We estimate this iconic 90s Ducati to bring in the region of £5,000 - £9,000.
