Background
The Datsun 240z was once a quietly underrated car that many people overlooked in favour of other more recognised brands and models, not so anymore. There’s very good reason for this, these cars have enormous potential and appeal to proper petrol heads with a straight six carburettor fed engine with a sleek sporty body design. It’s not hard to see the influence of the E-type in Nissan’s minds when they were designing the Z and its legacy has continued to this day with the 350z, 370z and newly unveiled ‘Z’ (although that won’t be coming to UK shores) it’s been a winning formula for Nissan for all these years.
We didn’t see many of the 240’s in the UK because when it was introduced in 1969 at the Tokyo motor show although it was cheaper than the established British sports cars and undercut the Corvette this was only true for our American cousins. Import taxes pushed the prices up to near that of the E-Type and with such a successful British made car on sale at the same time it’s no wonder the Datsun didn’t get as much of a look in.
Couple that to the relatively short-lived rust prevention from 1970’s Datsun manufacturing processes and the salted/wet UK roads and the Datsun’s simply dissolved into the history books. So with all that taken into account, finding a UK model in this good a condition despite some minor work needing doing, its unsurprising that people jump at the chance to own one.
