Background

The Daimler Super V8 was the top of the XJ range and featured softer suspension and all available luxury features, whilst being cosmetically differentiated by the fluted radiator grille and rear boot plinth. The Super V8 came with the supercharged engine found in the XJR, meaning it was certainly no slouch in the power department. Being a supercharged, long wheelbase car might have suggested it would suffer in the handling department but with the addition of Jaguar’s adaptive suspension or CATS system, it held the road well whilst translating as little of the rough surface into the cabin as possible.

Typically used by dignitaries and prime ministers, the XJ and the Daimler have been highly regarded for their composure, looks, performance and luxury. With this car being 22 years old now, it is a lot of car for the money and would make an excellent long-distance tourer.

Overview

Purchased in July of this year, the Daimler has only had 4 previous owners with a modest mileage of 104200 miles. It remains in good working order with few blemishes and comes with a stack of history and papers to document any work it has had over its 22 years on the road.

A rare long wheelbase 4-seater example, it benefits from a comprehensive specification, including:

  • Alpine premium stereo with Cassette and CD Changer
  • Car phone
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Climate control with working AC
  • Rear picnic tables
  • Three position memory drivers seat
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Cruise control
  • Sport mode
  • Automatic dimming mirror
  • Automatic Wipers
  • Automatic headlights
  • Navigation system
  • Power folding mirrors
  • Front heated windscreen
  • Sunroof

Exterior

Gold exterior colour over beige interior upholstery is a timeless combination for Jaguars and Daimlers and looks every bit as handsome and complimentary on this car as you’d expect. The exterior condition is good overall with a few blemishes and marks here and there, fair wear and tear for its 22 years of service. The rear bumper has a few minor marks and a scuff just above the exhaust on the driver’s side and the front wings are just starting to show small sections of bubbling behind the wheels too. There is also some corrosion starting to show at the bottom of the rear windscreen.

The trim around the car is in good condition showing minimal pitting or damage and the wheels look clean and tidy with only one showing signs of a small scuff, whereas it looks like there are relatively new Kumho Ecsta tyres fitted with plenty of life left in them.

Interior

Arguably the biggest draw to these cars would be their luxurious interior, fitted with cruise control and interior phone along with all other luxury options to come on the XJ and V8 Daimler/Vanden Plas models. Beige/cream leather upholstery adorns most of the cabin, and it remains in great condition with only some creasing and the odd minor scuff on the driver’s seat. Surprisingly the individual rear seats look to have not had much traffic remaining in clean, uncreased condition. Also featuring in the back is extended leg room for passengers, a fold down walnut covered tray table along with all the seat adjustability and back massager built into the rear seat backs. The rear-seat passengers are also provided with lamb's wool floor mats and rear window blinds.

Up front, everything is reported to be working in the cabin including the luxury features and the walnut veneer on the dash and part-wood-trimmed steering wheel all looks to be in fine condition giving the interior an extra dash of style and class.

Mechanical

The 4.0 litre V8 in the Daimler is elsewhere found in the Jaguar XJR, meaning this car is no slouch. The XJR’s supercharged V8 has 370 bhp on tap propelling it to 60mph from a standing start in 5.6 seconds. The Daimler’s engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox which gives a buttery smooth change.

The seller reports that the mechanicals of the car are in good working order and in the engine bay there are no signs of fluid leaks, split hoses or exposed wires. The metal work in the bay looks to be in good condition too and the video shows a relatively quiet and civilised noise form the exhaust, exactly what you’d expect from this luxurious car.

History

Purchased from Westover Jaguar in 2001, it remained in their service network until a new ownership in 2013. The Daimler was then serviced and maintained by a Jaguar independent specialist until the present day. The car comes with three sets of keys - two black and one green valet key - and a full suite of owner’s manuals packed in a leather branded wallet. The V5C is present and there is also a stack of paperwork documenting the work carried out on the car in the past years.

The supercharger was replaced in July 2015, two fuel pumps were replaced in January 2020, and in 2023 an underside restoration has been carried out.

The current MOT on the car expires on the 28th September 2024.

Summary

This Daimler looks to be in good condition needing only some minor TLC to make it fit for dignitaries again. Tidying up the corrosion and the few scuffs would bring this car back to its high status once more.

We’d value this car at £5,000 to £7,000 which considering the condition is a lot of car for the money.
