Background

Despite last being built 30 years ago, the Daimler DS420 still serves the royal fleets of Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden, and the United Kingdom today. First seen in 1968 and more commonly known simply as the Daimler Limousine, it’s thought that more of these stately cars have been used by monarchs than any other.

Near the end of its run, the DS420 was also the very last vehicle to be powered by Jaguar’s Le Mans winning XK twin-cam straight-six, ending an illustrious line of machines starting with the XK120–the closest thing in the world to a supercar in 1948.

Overview

The auction car represents the second model year of the car’s final facelift, built from 1987-1992 and referred to as the 420G MkIV. Changes were suitably reserved in nature, and most notably included new black rub strips on the bumpers.

Striking two-tone paint emphasizes delicate styling that’s lost on darker cars, and condition appears to be quite nice throughout. These are among the very last coachbuilt cars ever built by Jaguar/Daimler, and represent spectacular value on today’s market.

Exterior

Styling changed very little over these cars long 24 year production run, incorporating only small changes to Daimler’s traditional fluted grille as well as a handful of less insignificant updates–save for plastic-coated bumpers, the earliest and latest DS420s are virtually indistinguishable to the untrained eye.

This one’s red upper and dark lower highlight the lovely sweep of its sheetmetal, a very pretty feature that is virtually lost on dark, single-color examples. Note the factory dual exhaust and 1960’s era tail lights.

Interior

The car’s Jaguar DNA shows again in the luxuriously finished and comprehensively equipped burl wood dashboard, as well as in its distinct T-handle gear selector, steering wheel, and various other fittings.

The sofa-like rear seat is what this car is all about, and accordingly its passengers are afforded palatial legroom, shoulder room, and headroom. Note also the foldaway jump seats and glass divider.

Mechanical

Developed around Jaguar’s flagship Mark X/420G platform, these cars utilize four-wheel independent suspension, and though heavy at around 4,700 lbs, they’re actually known to handle quite well. Naturally, ride quality and refinement are also said to be top notch.

Built until 1992, these were the very final cars fitted with Jaguar’s Le Mans winning XK twin-cam six, and the auction car beat out the last Jaguar to run the engine, the 1987 XJ6, by just a year.

History

This car is sold with limited documented history.

Summary

Large and formal yet mechanically intriguing, surprisingly engaging to drive, and wearing truly transformative colors, this grand old car is an ideal entry into the world of coachbuilt British luxury.

Estimated $3,000 - $5,000.
