Background

The Daimler DS420 Limousine was introduced in 1968 to replace both the Daimler DR450 and BMC's Vanden Plas Princess.

The DS420 was based on the underpinnings of Jaguar's 420G and was powered by Jaguar’s straight-six 4.2-litre XK engine.

The passengers were seated behind a bulkhead with a sliding window that isolated them from the driver's compartment.

The most important three of the six passengers would sit facing forward on a bench seat, while the others sat on pop-up folding seats.

When they weren’t being employed to convey Sheiks, Emperors, Presidents, Kings, Queens or other Heads of State from A to B in considerable style, they often found themselves being used for weddings or funerals.

The eccentric American billionaire Howard Hughes had one with a toilet fitted under the rear bench.

The long line of Daimler limousines finally came to an end in 1992. The last DS420 to leave the factory was also the last car to use the 44-year-old Jaguar XK engine design.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

VIN: SAJDWATL3AA201615.

Odometer Reading: 000015 kms.

Clearly, this car has covered more than 15 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this LHD auto 1992 car comes with no history or service records.

We know that it was alive and well in Swanley, Kent, in 2005 and prior to that was the property of a paint manufacturer in Leicester.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this Daimler DS420 Limousine is good in parts, less so in others, but is generally worthy of the time and attention required to address some its bodywork issues and restore its former grandeur.

Exterior

The black paintwork is in reasonable overall condition and mostly has plenty of shine and lustre to it.

The bodywork is free of any significant dents, bumps or creases that we can see.

The panel gaps and shut lines are consistent.

The chrome work is mostly OK, as are the lights, badging and trim.

There is bubbling and flaking below the windscreen, at the base of the driver’s door and the base of the rear door and the sill beneath it on the same side.

There are a few swirly scratches on the front wings, bonnet and wheel arches, plus various paint chips on the leading edges of the doors.

There are two or three long scratches on the rear passenger-side wing and there is rust running along the bodywork behind and around the rear bumper.

The wheels appear to be in good order.

Interior

The interior is in very impressive condition.

The cream leather upholstery, front and back, is neither split, cracked nor particularly creased.

The front seats need cleaning, but are otherwise fine as far as we can tell.

The rear seats look untroubled by either time or use. Even the pop-up seats in the middle seem to have survived the passage of time well.

The dark red carpets and mats have clearly been subject to the unwanted attentions of moths at some point and are quite threadbare in places, particularly at the rear.

The wood veneers on the dashboard, centre console, door cappings and inserts are rich and glossy.

The door cards seem to be in good order.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity, from what we can see.

The engine and engine bay are clean and dry, and everything seems to be in its right and proper place.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record, but it does have an out-of-date UK V5C registration certificate.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

Apart from some bodywork corrosion issues, this car seems to be in fair overall condition.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning, this car should be worthy of the time and attention required to get it back to a first-class state.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €10,000 - €20,000.

Feel free to ask any questions or make observations in the comments section below, or try our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’.
