Background

Despite last being built 30 years ago, the Daimler DS420 still serves the royal fleets of Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden, and the United Kingdom today. First seen in 1968 and more commonly known simply as the Daimler Limousine, it’s thought that more of these stately cars have been used by monarchs than any other.

Near the end of its run, the DS420 was also the very last vehicle to be powered by Jaguar’s Le Mans winning XK twin-cam straight-six, ending an illustrious line of machines starting with the XK120 - the closest thing in the world to a supercar in 1948.

Overview

This is a rare landaulette car - notice the fractional convertible soft top over the rearmost portion of the cabin. The auction car also represents the first model year of the car’s final facelift, built from 1987-1992 and referred to as the 420G MkIV. Changes were suitably reserved in nature, and most notably included new black rub strips on the bumpers.

Exterior

Like a great many of these cars, which were and remain very popular with wedding and chauffeur services, the auction car wears white. Styling changed very little over these cars long 24 year production run, incorporating only small changes to Daimler’s traditional fluted grille as well as a handful of less insignificant updates.

Landaulette coachwork dates to 18th century carriages, and though it remained a popular choice for buyers of large, expensive automobiles throughout the early 20th century, by the time this car was built the body style had been out of fashion for decades. Anachronism or not, we think it’s fabulous.

Interior

The car’s Jaguar DNA shows again in the luxuriously finished and comprehensively equipped burl wood dashboard, as well as in its distinct T-handle gear selector, steering wheel, and various other fittings.

The sofa-like rear seat is what this car is all about, and accordingly its passengers are afforded palatial legroom, shoulder room, and headroom, the latter becoming infinite with the landaulette top down.

Note also the foldaway jump seats, glass divider, and liquor cabinet.

Mechanical

Developed around Jaguar’s flagship Mark X/420G platform, these cars utilize four-wheel independent suspension, and though heavy at around 4,700 lbs, they’re actually known to handle quite well. Naturally, ride quality and refinement are also said to be top notch.

From 1987 to 1992, these were the very final cars fitted with Jaguar’s Le Mans winning XK twin-cam six, and the auction car shares a model year with the last Jaguar to run the engine, the 1987 XJ6.

History

This car is sold without known history.

Summary

Large and formal yet mechanically and historically intriguing, and fitted with a scarcely found coachwork configuration, this is one compelling machine. Estimated $5,000 - $10,000.
