Background

The Daimler DS420 Limousine was introduced in 1968 to replace both the Daimler DR450 and BMC's Vanden Plas Princess.

The DS420 was based on the underpinnings of Jaguar's 420G and was powered by Jaguar’s straight-six 4.2-litre XK engine.

The passengers were seated behind a bulkhead with a sliding window that isolated them from the driver's compartment.

When they weren’t being employed to convey Sheiks, Emperors, Presidents, Kings, Queens or other Heads of State from A to B in considerable style, they often found themselves being used for weddings or funerals.

The eccentric American billionaire Howard Hughes had one with a toilet fitted under the rear bench.

The DS420 was withdrawn from production in 1992.

Overview

This motor car is being sold as part of an overseas collection. It has been imported under the Bonhams temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to the lower rate 5% import tax if the car is to remain in the UK & purchased by a private individual. The 5% is calculated on the final selling price. For example, if the car sells for £2,000, then £100 is added, making the total amount payable of £2,100.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, and proof that HMRC fees are paid. If the car is subsequently exported abroad within 30 days then these fees are refundable.

A company buying the car will have to pay VAT on the hammer price, as well as duty + VAT.

Lastly, there will be a nominal administration fee of £350 for processing the NOVA application, and payable direct to the shipping company. A completed and processed NOVA will provide you formal proof that all duties & taxes are paid in UK and thus allow you to register the vehicle with the DVLA

In common with the majority of cars in this collection, this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It is available for view and inspection at our HQ near Abingdon and we will be delighted to show the car to you and/or your appointed engineer.

Chassis No: SADDWATL3AC200700.

Odometer: 144,381 miles.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this RHD 1970 Daimler DS420 Limousine is a project in need of an enthusiast with the time and expertise to invest in it.

It’s far from perfect and there are some issues to address both inside and out, but it does at least appear to be completely authentic and original.

We know that it entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2015.

Exterior

Presented in a two-tone, black over white paint finish, the car’s paintwork is good in some parts, much less so in others – particularly along the flanks where it seems to have been deluged with some unknown liquid that has left residual streaks everywhere.

The bodywork is largely free of any indentations, bumps or creases.

There is, however, a significant amount of corrosion evident in several places around the car.

There is bubbling, rust, flaking and some sizeable holes in, variously, the sills and doors on both sides, in the wings, above and below the windscreen, and around the n/s/f indicator.

There is also rust and bubbling in the ‘C’ pillars and below the windows.

The chrome work is fairly decent, although some trim is coming loose in places. The wheels also seem to be in reasonable condition, but the n/s/r tyre is flat.

Interior

One of the most notable features of the interior is that you can see the exterior without looking through the windows - thanks to a large hole through the floor-pan in the front passenger footwell.

Other holes can be found in the n/s/r floor-pan.

Elsewhere, the are rips and tears to the leather on the driver’s seat and the carpets and mats throughout are rather tired and moth-eaten.

The rear cabin is really quite reasonable, all things considered. The rear seats are in decent condition, as are the pop-up middle seats.

The lacquer is peeling and fading in places on the dashboard and door inserts.

The door cards are broadly OK, with the exception of the driver’s door card, which is ripped at the top.

The headlining is hanging down.

The instrument cluster seems fine, as does the steering wheel and gear selector.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start the vehicle.

Mechanical

Oxidisation has had a good go at various parts of the car’s undersides, with the worst of it manifested in holes through the floor-pan and sills.

Everything in the engine bay seems to be in its right and proper place and appears to be clean and dry.

History

The car doesn’t come with any history or service record.

Any paperwork we have is photographed and displayed in the photo gallery. We do not have anything else.

Summary

There is some work to be done to the bodywork, for sure, but we think the underlying quality of the vehicle might make it a worthwhile investment, provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals prove to be in good working order.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of £2,000 - £4,000.
