Background

The Daimler 2.5 V8/V8-250 was produced in the United Kingdom from 1962 to 1969. It was the first Daimler car to be based on a Jaguar platform, the first with a unitary body, and the last to feature a Daimler engine.

And what an engine.

The hemispherical head V8 designed by Edward Turner and first used in the SP250 Daimler Dart sports car was an exceptional unit, and largely responsible for the V8-250’s reputation as one of the finest cars of its era.

An automatic transmission was standard, with a manual ‘box - and power-steering - being optional extras.

The top speed was reached at 6800rpm, prompting Autocar to write, “The Daimler’s particular strength is therefore it’s sweet and near silent running at any engine speed.”

The Daimler 250 lasted from 1962 until 1967, at which point it was replaced by the V8-250, a fine example of which we have here.

The changes were subtle and amounted to little more than slim-line bumpers and over-riders, twin air-cleaners, and a negative-earth electrical system and alternator.

The interior was also lightly revised with padding added to the instrument panel and door cappings, ventilated leather on the seats, and a split-bench front seat that reclined.

The V8-250 ceased production in 1969, by which time around 17,600 had been built.

Chassis No: 1A20513BW

Odometer: 79,133 km.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1967 LHD auto Daimler V8-250 is a good example of the model and in very reasonable, though not perfect, condition.

Exterior

The panels are straight and even, the bodywork is free of any significant flaws, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and even.

The paintwork still has plenty of shine and lustre to it.

In general, this car presents very well from every angle.

The lights and lenses are good, as are the wheels, save for a few spots on the chrome hub caps.

The chrome is fairly good in most places, including the main front grille and the bumpers.

The Daimler bonnet mascot is foxed and pitted, as is the chrome around the rear light clusters.

A section of chrome trim is missing around the passenger side rear window. Some of the exterior rubber trim is cracked and perished.

There is some flaking, split and missing paint just above and behind the front bumper on the passenger side.

There is some rust dust around the ventilation panel below the windscreen, some paint chips around the door handles, and a scratch on the driver’s side front wing.

There are also stone chips on the leading edges of various panels, including the wheel arch sections, doors, bonnet and boot.

There is some apparently superficial rust above the chrome trim at the top of the windscreen.

The fuel filler flap doesn’t close completely flush with the bodywork at present.

Interior

The interior of the car is also very presentable.

The only obvious signs of wear and use are on the leather seats, where the front bench has fared rather worse than the rear and is heavily creased, cracked in places and very dirty.

The rear seats are also creased, but not to the same degree as those in the front.

The backs of the front seats are discoloured.

The carpets and mats are in decent condition, as are the door cards.

The headlining is mostly good, except around the rear screen where it is out of shape, worn and a little discoloured.

The panel above the passenger footwell is hanging loose. The same is true of the panel under the steering column.

The veneers on the dashboard and door cappings have survived their 55 years of life well.

The dashboard and instruments look to be in good condition, too, although there are a few scratches and scuffs on the steering wheel and gear selector.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Any paperwork shown in the gallery is a facsimile and in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

We think this seems to be a very decent example of a car that was ahead of its time in terms of style, engine design and handling characteristics.

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of the car appears to be, then this handsome vehicle should provide its next owner with years of classic motoring pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €7,000 - €10,000.
