Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ No doubt about it: it's a masterpiece of French automotive design. ”

There is little history or documents however, it does have a French ‘Certificat d’Immatriculation’ and some old registration documents from the Netherlands.

Background

Just as it had done 21 years previously with the revolutionary Traction Avant, Citroën stunned the world again at the 1955 Paris Salon with the launch of the futuristically styled DS.

Beneath the shark-like newcomer's aerodynamically efficient, low-drag bodyshell, there was an all-independent, self-levelling, hydro-pneumatic suspension, plus power-operated brakes, clutch and steering.

No European car would match the ride quality of the DS for several years, and the fundamental soundness of Citroën's hydro-pneumatic suspension was demonstrated by its survival in various models for more than four decades.

The DS's original 1,911 cc overhead-valve, long-stroke engine was replaced in 1966 by a short-stroke 1,985 cc unit, also available in 2,175 cc and 2,347 cc versions, while other DS developments included swivelling headlights, fuel injection and a five-speed manual gearbox.

It’s not surprising that 12,000 advance orders were taken.

Ultimately, Citroën would sell 1,455,746 examples, with 1,330,755 manufactured at the Paris Quai André-Citroën production plant.

Overview

VIN: DS20-4725871.

This LHD auto car comes with no history or records beyond whatever is shown in the documents section.

It does, however, have a French ‘Certificat d’Immatriculation’ and some old registration documents from the Netherlands.

We know that the car was in the Netherlands in 1999, that it had previously been in France until at least 1992 and that, in 2010, it was sold (by a man who is well-known to our UK operation) to the vendor’s Swiss agent to be shipped to the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles.

We haven’t started or driven the car so, consequently, our assessment of it is made purely on the grounds of its appearance – which is truly excellent, both inside and out.

Today, the odometer reads 66,294 kms.

In 2010, it read 66,286 kms.

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carseurope.net.

Exterior

The strikingly modern-looking (even today) bodywork is in very good condition and there are no dinks, dents or other defects of any consequence that we can see.

The gold/silver paintwork is also very decent and has retained plenty of shine and lustre.

The front wheels look very good but, as we haven’t started the car and got the suspension to rise, we can’t see enough of the rear wheels to form an opinion.

There are some scratches on the bonnet which continue onto the passenger door behind it.

There are also some scuffs above the headlamp cowling on the same side and on the front of the bonnet.

There are a few paint chips on the rear wing on the driver’s side.

The chrome, trim and badging all appear to be in excellent order.

The reversing light beneath the bumper on the passenger side is loose and dangling down.

Interior

If anything, the condition inside is even more impressive.

The russet-coloured velour interior looks very fresh and there’s no damage to report as far as we can see.

The carpets, mats and headlining are all beyond reproach and the seats, front and back, are comfortable and supportive.

There is one small tear in the pocket on the front passenger-side door card.

The vinyl on the parcel shelf is a little warped and lumpy.

The dashboard, steering wheel and controls are very good.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials, or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay seems to be present and correct, with the exception of the totally shredded tyre on the spare wheel.

The undersides of the car seem to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documents are shown in the gallery.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Summary

These cars are important milestones in the annals of automotive history and technological advancement, and we think this low-kilometres example should prove to be a particularly good representative of the model - provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning and as good as the rest of it.
