Background

As the soon-to-be legendary, yet short-lived prosperity of “Roaring Twenties” America replaced the many challenges of the immediate post-WW I years, General Motors’ high-volume Chevrolet Division shifted its focus away from direct competition with Ford’s lower-priced but rudimentary Model T. Although eventual GM design legend Harley Earl had not yet applied his deft touch to the Chevrolet models for 1927, they were handsomely styled and outsold archrival Ford for the first time that year. With their winning looks and trim proportions, it is only natural that street rodders would apply their unique handiwork to the late-1920s Chevrolets.

Overview

Thankfully maintaining its handsome original body design – a 2-door, 5-passenger Coach in 1920s Chevrolet parlance, thankfully without modification, this 1927 Chevrolet street rod began as a “barn find” original vehicle in Colorado. As offered, it is a decidedly tasteful and drivable street rod with modern running gear and classic presence.

Exterior

The product of a high-quality, body-off-frame restoration and build, this 1927 Chevrolet notably retains the original steel bodywork, fenders and hood, with restoration and refinishing including preparation with primer and epoxy sealant underneath the color coats. A new roof insert was installed, utilizing fiberglass reinforcements and covered with Mercedes-Benz top material. The original bumpers and other bright items were refurbished and re-chromed. New glass was installed all around. Polished American Racing Torq-Thrust wheels mounting radial tires provide an appropriate finishing touch.

Interior

Trimmed in Tan vinyl and Mint Green cloth upholstery with Tan carpeting, the Chevy’s inviting interior compartment is updated with custom seats and upholstery. Greeting the driver are VDO gauges within a polished stainless-steel dash insert, an electric speedometer, a Chevrolet tilt steering column and wheel, and a Lokar floor shifter. Electric windshield wipers and a heater with blower enhance usability and comfort.

Mechanical

Riding a boxed frame with added crossmembers for strength, the Chevy delivers a modern driving experience with a Mustang II-style independent front suspension system, including rack-and-pinion steering gear and front disc the brakes. Motivation is provided by a Chevrolet Vortec 350 cubic-inch V-8 engine breathing deeply though a 550 CFM Holley carburetor, Edelbrock intake manifold, Hedman headers, and a full-length stainless steel dual exhaust system. A GM Turbo-Hydramatic 350 automatic transmission and a 2.73:1 Chevy Nova rear axle send the power to the pavement. Supporting features include a ¼-inch stainless-steel firewall, electronic ignition, 16-gallon gas tank, Jay’s wiring panel, and a special radiator with overflow tank and radiator. The original radiator top was retained.

History

As related by the Seller, they purchased this handsome Chevy street rod from a prolific hot rodder resident in Richfield, Washington, who had the car restored and built. The Seller acquired the car after seeing it featured on the front page in the feature article of Northwest Hot Rod magazine. According to the Seller, the Chevy “…has participated in countless shows, has won over 70 trophies, including many Best of Show awards. The proudest win was Best of Show in Cornelius, Oregon, where the vehicle garnered a six-foot-tall trophy.” The Seller advises that while they are willing to include a selection of trophies with the sale of the vehicle, they would nonetheless like to keep some of them as keepsakes.

In addition to displaying the Chevy at car shows, they have also enjoyed the vehicle on local tours, with destinations including Willamette Vineyards in Salem, Oregon, and to Newport on the Oregon coast. A consistent attention magnet, the Chevrolet is also stated by the Seller to run smoothly and reliably, being capable of easy cruising at 75 mph on the freeway while achieving a creditable 15 MPG and handling corners with confidence. A vintage-sounding electronic horn is one of the Seller’s favorite features of the Chevy that never fails to captivate all who experience this wonderful street rod. A specification sheet of the restoration and build is included, along with an original Chevrolet advertisement.

Summary

The multiple award-winning product of a high-quality restoration and build and featuring its unmodified original bodywork, this 1927 Chevrolet street rod is a wonderful example with all the hard work already done. Requiring only an enthusiastic new owner to enjoy it as intended, the Chevrolet is ready to cruise and show with friends and family.
