Background

Unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as a Coupé form and released in Roadster form (as seen here) a year later, the Z4M is fitted with the M3’s sublime 3.2-litre, S54 inline-six engine, whose 338bhp is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

With fly-by-wire throttle and VANOS, the Z4M scorches from rest to 60mph in 4.7 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Numerous other parts from the coveted E46 M3 were used most notably the the limited-slip differential from the M3, rear subframe, front suspension control arms and several aspects of the braking system.

In production between April 2006 and 2008, a total of 4,275 Coupés and 5,070 Roadsters were produced by BMW, with the majority destined for the European and UK market, though a generous amount were sent to the US, predominantly made up of soft-tops like this.

Overview

First registered in March 2007, this Silbergrau Metallic BMW Z4M benefits from both a low mileage and an exemplary service and maintenance record.

Freshly MoT’d and fitted with a red leather interior, it’s the most sensible way to indulge your inner speed demon we’ve seen in a while.

Exterior

The silver-grey metallic paint gives the Z4 a hewn-from-solid look that allows the car’s muscular lines to come to the fore; it’s a great shape anyway but this one looks like it’s been carved from a solid chunk of aluminium.

Of course, its condition helps that illusion because it is extraordinarily well presented – but then that’s what you get when a car has only covered 48,000 miles and has been as pampered as this one clearly has; with no dents, dinks or ripples, it could be five years old rather than 15.

The fabric roof is in a similarly good condition. It fits tautly, is free of damage, and furls and unfurls as it should. Raised, the car is almost coupé-like in its civility, while you get the full wind-in-the-hair blast with it lowered. It’s also got a proper glass heated rear screen, which helps make this a true all-season sportscar.

The light lenses, glazing and badges are all excellent, too.

As are the 18-inch M-Sport alloy wheels, which are free of scrapes, kerbing and other damage. They’re fitted with matching Michelin Pilot Sport tyres too, all of which have good tread.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

Flaws? Well, there is a tiny mark on the offside front alloy wheel (#120) and the tyres, while still legal, are getting on a bit.

Interior

The red leather interior is wonderfully simple and yet suitably robust; a convertible’s interior fixtures and fittings take a beating from the sun and the elements but this one has weathered its 15 years with impressive aplomb with colours that are still bright and vivid.

And those bright red seats are the first thing you notice, followed by the matching door cards. And yet, while they’re an arresting sight, they don’t come anywhere near to seeming vulgar. It’s a clever party trick and one BMW should be applauded for.

The M-Sport steering wheel and gearknob for the six-speed manual gearbox are present and correct, as are the matching sill plates.

There’s a wind deflector too, which is capable of keeping your hair ruffle-free even at the sort of silly speeds this inspirational engine and chassis combination encourage.

The dashboard is more sombre than the rest of the cockpit but it is flawlessly ergonomic and works just as well now as it ever has, which is all you need really, isn’t it?

The boot is as clean as everywhere else and lifting the carpet shows nothing other than solid metal.

Of course, it’s not perfect but when the only flaw we can find worth mentioning is some slight softening to the bolsters on the driver’s seat you know there isn’t anything to worry about.

Mechanical

As you can see, it starts well and revs and ticks over as it should. It also makes a surprisingly nice exhaust note.

The engine bay is very nicely presented and only the most fastidious would find the need to do anything more than to give it a bit of a clean.

The underside is clean and solid and no MoT tester has ever mentioned anything about structural rust or corrosion.

The BMW’s MoT certificate is valid until February 2024 and it was gained, like every one since 2014, with no advisories.

The history file includes a stack of old MoT certificates as well as some recent invoices and a well-stamped service history booklet.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clean and it comes with two keys.

Summary

With a guide price of between £15,000 and £20,000, this is a convertible sportscar that is as sensible as it is quick; with well-proven underpinnings and unmatched reliability, going this fast has never been so easy.

It’s a versatile car as well, as much at home in the supermarket car-park as it is the south of France, moving seamlessly from ski slopes to beach holidays by way of inter-continental high-speed blasts along motorway and mountain pass.

If you’re going to have a mid-life crisis, this is the sensible way to do it – and if you want to be more reckless, then buy this and get a tattoo.
